None shall lay hold of faith and worldly life as is their due,
He will not attach religion and worldly life to their rights
Except one who fastens both his hands to his ropes.
Except the one who attaches his palms to their causes
تَفديكَmay ransom you أَنفُسُناour lives اللاتيwhich نَضَنُّwe are loath to part بِهاwith them
تَفديكَ أَنفُسُنا اللاتي نَضَنُّ بِها
مِنfrom مُؤلِماتِthe pains of الَّذيthat which تَشكوyou complain of وَأَوصابِهand its ailments
مِن مُؤلِماتِ الَّذي تَشكو وَأَوصابِه
May our lives, which we guard so jealously, ransom you
Our souls that we live by ransom you
From the pains of what you suffer and its ailments.
From the pains which you complain and its wounds
لَستَyou are not العَليلَthe ailing one الَّذيwhom عُدناهُwe visited him تَكرُمَةًas a mark of honor
لَستَ العَليلَ الَّذي عُدناهُ تَكرُمَةً
بَلِrather العَليلُthe ailing one الَّذيthat which أَصبَحتَyou have come to be تُكنىcalled by an honorific بِهby it
بَلِ العَليلُ الَّذي أَصبَحتَ تُكنى بِه
You are not the ailing one we visited out of respect;
You are not the sick one whom we visited out of generosity
Rather, the ailing one is that which now gives you your honorific.
But the sick one whom you have come to be called
