I yearn for the goodness and beauty of Iraq
Though the heat and burning winds deny it
It's the land we desire when the season is kind
And flee when summer makes its coals blaze
Our first love and intimate friend
Whom we love though Damascus eclipses its glory
I've travelled the breadth of the east and west
Roaming its horizons, journeying far
But found no place like Syria for repose
Where one rests with a cup passing to and fro
Curing bodies and delighting eyes
Gladdening hearts oppressed, dispelling their gloom
Sacrosanct, spring spills o’er its meadows
In every house, a garden and stream flow
Its showers graced it, and made its beauty pure
For the Commander of the Faithful tours it
You set out to it with resolve
Its beginning and end passed in rectitude
In a year its good fortune rose to meet you
And Nawruz came to you, its herald
May its seasons succeed in blessing
Ever sacred, its days and months
And live forever noble deeds and sublime
For you are the light of the noble, their sun
