She sent back to me a gift—had she

Sent me one like it, I would not have returned it.

    فَاِذهَب لِشَأنِكَ راشِداً لَم تُطرَدِ

    And she says, "I have abandoned my waywardness;

So go your way, rightly guided, not driven away.

I used to suffer from my brother and my paternal uncles

On your account, through insults and threats against me.

So today my folly has ceased, and

My soul has drawn back with admirable patience and fortitude."

She has forsaken writing to me and answering my letters,

And chosen her lamp in the mosque instead.

If shedding my blood for no crime of mine

Is worship for you, O ʿAlwa, then worship on!

For you are more beguiling to hearts than she

Who appeared before David, the rightly guided prophet.

And when you alight in your homeland, never will

Its people's stars cease to run auspiciously.

Indeed, I deny my love for you and conceal it,

But my tears confess it; they have not denied it.

And tears bear witness that I am in love with you,

And people already know, even if tears had borne no witness.

If indeed you have returned my letters and insulted me,

Still, how often you called me, "O my master!"

So ask your heart how it rebelled, after

It had followed me, docile to the rein,

In the days when your brother lay in wait for me with his sword,

And the sword held him back, and my hand held him back.
