Hearts that lovely cheeks have wounded,

And a cupbearer who appeared like dawn as night drew on,

Passing round cups of wine, as though they were

Lamps of light in the cupbearers’ hands.

So wine claims all through which their blood flows,

And longing claims what their ribs enclose.

And true boon companions in a caliph’s company,

Whose hands now hold bounty and sword-blades.
