أَلاAh أَسعِدينيhelp me mourn بِالدُموعِwith tears السَواكِبِstreaming
عَلىover الوَجدِpassionate grief مِنfrom صَرمِthe estrangement of الحَبيبِthe beloved المُغاضِبِthe angry one
Ah, help me with streaming tears
in my anguish at my angry beloved’s estrangement.
وَسُحّيand pour forth دُموعاًtears هامِلاتٍflowing freely كَأَنَّماas though
لَهاfor them آمِرٌa commander يَرفَضُّgushes forth مِنfrom تَحتِbeneath حاجِبيmy eyebrow
And pour forth freely flowing tears, as though
they were under orders, gushing from beneath my brow.
أَلاAh وَاِستَزيريهاand ask her to visit إِلَيناto us تَطَلُّعاًin eager longing
وَقوليand say لَهاto her فيin السِرِّsecret ياO أُمَّmother of طالِبِTalib
Ah, ask her eagerly to visit us,
and tell her privately: O Umm Talib,
لِماذاwhy أَرَدتِyou wished الهَجرَestrangement مِنّيfrom me وَلَمand not أَكُنI have been
لِعَهدِكُمُto your knowledge ليof me بِالمَذوقِat all false-hearted المُوارِبِdeceitful
why have you chosen to forsake me, when I have never been,
as you know me, false-hearted or deceitful?
فَإِنso if كانَwas هَذاthis الصَرمُestrangement مِنكُمfrom you تَدَلُّلاًcoquetry
فَأَهلاًthen welcome وَسَهلاًand a warm welcome بِالدَلالِto coquetry المُخالِبِbeguiling
If this estrangement of yours is merely coyness,
then welcome, a warm welcome, to such beguiling coquetry.
وَإِنand if كُنتِyou were قَدalready بُلِّغتِyou were told ياO عَلوَʿAlwa باطِلاًa falsehood
بِقَولِby the words of عَدُوٍّan enemy فَاِسأَليthen inquire ثُمَّthen عاقِبيpunish
And if you have been told some falsehood, O ʿAlwa,
through an enemy’s words, then inquire, and only then punish.
وَلاand do not تَعجَليhasten بِالصَرمِto sever ties حَتّىuntil تَبَيَّنيyou ascertain
أَمُبلِغَwhether a bearer of حَقٍّtruth كانَhe was أَمor قَولَthe words of كاذِبِa liar
And do not hasten to sever ties until you ascertain
whether he bore the truth or spoke a liar’s words.
كَأَنَّas though جَميعَall الأَرضِthe earth حَتّىuntil أَراكُمُI see you
تُصَوَّرُis pictured فيin عَينيmy eye بِسودِas black العَقارِبِscorpions
It is as though all the earth, until I see you,
takes shape before my eyes as black scorpions.
وَلَوand even if زُرتُكُمI visited you فيin اليَومِa day سَبعينَseventy مَرَّةًtimes
لَكُنتُI would surely be كَذيlike one with فَرخٍa chick عَنِaway from الفَرخِthe chick غائِبِabsent
Even if I visited you seventy times a day,
I would be like a parent bird absent from its chick.
أَرانيI see myself أَبيتُI pass the night اللَيلَthe night صاحِبَone shedding عَبرَةٍa tear
مَشوقاًfilled with longing أُراعيI watch مُنجِداتِthe ascending الكَواكِبِstars
I find myself passing the night in tears,
yearning, watching the stars climb high.
أُراقِبُI keep watch طولَthe length of اللَيلِthe night حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen اِنقَضىit ends
رَقَبتُI watched طُلوعَthe rising of الشَمسِthe sun حَتّىuntil المَغارِبِsunsets
I keep watch throughout the night until, when it ends,
I watch the sun’s ascent until its setting.
إِذاif ذَهَباthey both depart هَذانِthese two مِنّيfrom me بِلَذَّتيwith my pleasure
فَماthen not أَناI فيin الدُنياthis world لِعَيشٍof life بِصاحِبِa possessor at all
If these two rob me of my pleasure,
then I have no share in life in this world.
فَياso, alas شُؤمَthe ill fortune of جَدّيmy lot كَيفَhow أَبكيI weep تَلَهُّفاًin anguished longing
عَلىover ماwhat مَضىhas passed مِنof وَصلِunion with بَيضاءَa fair-skinned woman كاعِبِbudding-breasted
Ah, my ill-starred fortune! How I weep in longing
for bygone union with a fair, budding-breasted maiden.
رَأَتshe saw رَغبَتيmy desire فيهاfor her فَأَبدَتso she showed زَهادَةًindifference
أَلاAh رُبَّmany a مَحرومٍone denied مِنَamong الناسِpeople راغِبِyearning
She saw my desire for her and displayed indifference.
Ah, many a soul among men longs in vain.
أُريدُI wish لِأَدعوto call غَيرَهاsomeone other than her فَيَرُدُّنيbut it turns me back
لِسانيmy tongue إِلَيهاto her بِاسمِهاwith her name كَالمُغالِبِlike one striving to overpower
I mean to call another, but I am drawn back
by my tongue to her, with her name, as though it strove to master me.
يَظَلُّkeeps لِسانيmy tongue يَشتَكيcomplaining of الشَوقَlonging وَالهَوىand love
وَقَلبيand my heart كَذيlike one in حَبسٍconfinement لِقَتلٍfor execution مُراقَبِunder guard
My tongue keeps complaining of longing and love,
while my heart is like a prisoner under guard awaiting execution.
وَإِنَّand indeed بِقَلبيin my heart كُلَّماwhenever هاجَstirs شَوقُهُits longing
حَراراتِthe burning heat of أَقباسٍfirebrands تَلوحُgleaming لِراهِبِfor a monk
And in my heart, whenever its longing stirs,
is the heat of firebrands that gleam before a monk.
فَلَوso if أَنَّthat قَلبيmy heart يَستَطيعُcould تَكَلُّماًspeak
لَحَدَّثَكُمit would surely tell you عَنّيabout me بِجَمِّof a multitude of العَجائِبِwonders
If my heart were able to speak,
it would tell you a wealth of wonders about me.
كَتَبتُI wrote فَأَكثَرتُand multiplied الكِتابَthe correspondence إِلَيكُمُto you
كَذيlike one with رَغبَةٍlonging حَتّىuntil لَقَدindeed مَلَّgrew weary كاتِبيmy scribe
I wrote and wrote so many letters to you,
like one full of longing, until even my scribe grew weary.
أَماdo you not تَتَّقينَfear اللَهَGod فيin قَتلِkilling عاشِقٍa lover
صَريعٍlaid low قَريحِwounded in القَلبِthe heart كَالشَنِّlike a worn-out waterskin ذائِبِwasting away
Do you not fear God in killing a lover,
laid low, wounded at heart, wasting like a worn-out waterskin?
فَأُقسِمُso I swear لَوif أَبصَرتِنيyou saw me مُتَضَرِّعاًpleading
أُقَلَّبُI turn طَرفيmy gaze نَحوَكُمtoward you كُلَّevery جانِبِdirection
I swear, if you saw me pleading,
turning my gaze toward you on every side,
وَحَوليand around me مِنَamong العُوّادِthe sickbed visitors باكٍone weeping وَمُشفِقٌand one concerned
أَباعِدُthe distant members of أَهليmy family كُلَّهُمall of them وَأَقارِبيand my close relatives
with weeping and anxious visitors around me,
all my distant family and my close kin,
لَأَبكاكِit would make you weep مِنّيof me ماwhat تَرينَyou see تَوَجُّعاًin sympathy
كَأَنَّكَas though you were بيbeside me ياO عَلوُʿAlwa قَدalready قامَhas risen نادِبيmy mourner
what you saw of me would make you weep in sympathy.
It is as though you were beside me, O ʿAlwa, my mourner already risen.
وَقَدand already قالَsaid داعيthe caller of الحُبِّlove هَلis there مِنany مُجاوِبِone who answers
فَأَقبَلتُso I came forward أَسعىhurrying قَبلَbefore كُلِّevery مُجاوِبِanswerer
And Love’s caller had cried: Is there anyone to answer?
So I came running before every other answerer.
فَماfor not إِنat all لَهُfor him إِلّاexcept إِلَيَّtoward me مَذاهِبٌpaths
تَكونُexist وَلاand not إِلّاexcept إِلَيهِtoward him مَذاهِبيmy paths
For he has no paths but those that lead to me,
nor do my paths lead anywhere but to him.
