O kinsman of ʿUlah, brotherhood has departed and sped away,

and what remains of affection is close to breaking apart.

You began—and whoever begins injustice is more unjust—so verse turned

against you, on a course that humbled you, then sped ahead.

Nor, where you are concerned, do I thirst for that

within whose two bounds I see a place for you to fall.

I jealously guard what lies between us, lest it be assailed

by the tongue of an enemy who found no opening in you.

And I would spare al-Dayyān the indignity of being pelted

with angry rhymes of poetry, in fives and fours.

And for many a grave in Najrān's lowlands, fear has stirred

within my ribs, lest its owls be startled.

I held estrangement's reins, lest it run its full course,

and curbed my verse, lest it rush headlong.

So if you call me to strife, I shall hasten; and if you call

for peace with me, I have left room for peace.
