أَمِنwas it because of نَظَريmy looking إِلَيكِat you صَدَدتِyou turned away عَنّيfrom me
وَواجَهَنيand confronted me اِلتِفاتُكِyour turning glance بِالوَعيدِwith a threat
Was it because I looked at you that you turned away from me,
and your glance confronted me with a threat?
فَآخِرُso the last نَظرَةٍglance كانَتwas وَعيداًa threat
وَأَوَّلُand the first نَظرَةٍglance سَبَبُthe cause of الصُدودِturning away
The last glance, then, was a threat,
and the first glance the cause of your turning away.
فَأَيُّthen which of النَظرَتَينِthe two glances أَشَدُّmore severe شُؤماًin ill omen
وَأَقرَبُand closer مِنto مُساعَدَةِhelping الحَسودِthe envious one
Which of the two glances, then, is more ill-omened,
and closer to helping the envious one?
وَمابَرَحَتand did not cease ظُنونُكِyour suspicions فِيَّabout me حَتّىuntil
تَناوَلَنيreached me عِقابُكِyour punishment مِنfrom جَديدِnew
And your suspicions about me did not cease until
your punishment reached me anew.
