قالواthey said مَطاياmounts الَّتيthe woman whom تَهوىyou love سَتَرتَحِلُwill depart
قالوا مَطايا الَّتي تَهوى سَتَرتَحِلُ
فيon يَومِناthis day of ours أَوor غَدٍtomorrow وَالبَينُand parting مُقتَبَلُapproaching
في يَومِنا أَو غَدٍ وَالبَينُ مُقتَبَلُ
They said, “The mounts of the woman you love will depart
They said the camels that yearn
today or tomorrow, and parting is at hand.”
Will depart one day or tomorrow while separation lies ahead
فَأَضرَمواso they kindled إِذwhen أَشاعواthey spread news of البَينَthe parting فيin كَبِديmy liver
فَأَضرَموا إِذ أَشاعوا البَينَ في كَبِدي
وَالقَلبِand the heart نارَfire الهَوىlove وَالشَوقُand longing تَشتَعِلُblazes
وَالقَلبِ نارَ الهَوى وَالشَوقُ تَشتَعِلُ
So, when they spread word of parting, they kindled in my liver
So they have inflicted, when they spread separation in my inner self,
and heart a blazing fire of love and longing.
A fire of passion and longing that flares up
وَالبَينُand parting يَفعَلُdoes بِالعُشّاقِto lovers مُحتَكِماًholding sway
وَالبَينُ يَفعَلُ بِالعُشّاقِ مُحتَكِماً
مالَيسَwhat ... does not يَفعَلُهُdoes it الهِندِيُّthe Indian sword وَالأَسَلُand spears
مالَيسَ يَفعَلُهُ الهِندِيُّ وَالأَسَلُ
And parting, holding sway over lovers, does
And separation acts with lovers as a tyrant
what neither the Indian sword nor spears can do.
