I broke with Abu Layla; before him I had never been
one to sever ties, to find affection wanting, or to be aloof.
أَغُبُّI make infrequent السَلامَgreetings حينَwhen تَكثيرِmultiplying مَعشَرٍa company of people
يَعُدّونَthey consider تَكريرَrepeating السَلامِgreetings تَقاضِياpressing a claim
I space out my greetings while a company multiplies theirs—
people who count repeated greetings as pressing a claim.
وَحَسبيand enough for me اِقتِضاءًas pressing a claim أَنthat أُطيفَI pay a visit بِواقِفٍto someone aware
عَلىof خَلَّتيmy need أَوor عالِمٍsomeone knowledgeable بِمَكانِياof my standing
And to press my claim, I need only visit one aware
of my need, or acquainted with my standing.
مَتىwhenever تَسأَلِyou ask السِجزِيَّal-Sijzi عَنabout غَيبِthe hidden truth of حاجَتيmy need
يُبَيِّنhe makes clear لَكَto you السِجزِيُّal-Sijzi ماwhat كانَwas خافِياhidden
Whenever you ask al-Sijzi about the hidden truth of my need,
al-Sijzi will make plain to you what was concealed.
فِداءٌa ransom لَهُfor him مُستَبطَءُone deemed slow in النُجحِfulfillment أَخدَجَتmiscarried
مَواعيدُهُhis promises حَتّىuntil رَجَعنَthey turned into أَمانِياwishes
May one slow to grant requests be his ransom—abortive were
his promises, until they turned into mere wishes.
