غُروبُstreams دَمعٍtears مِنَfrom الأَجفانِthe eyelids تَنهَمِلُpour down
وَحُرقَةٌand burning pain بِغَليلِwith the heat of الحُزنِgrief تَشتَعِلُblazes
Streams of tears pour from the eyelids,
and a burning ache blazes with the heat of grief.
وَلَيسَand not يُطفِئُquenches نارَthe fire of الحُزنِgrief إِذwhen وَقَدَتit flared
عَلىwithin الجَوانِحِthe ribs إِلّاexcept الواكِفُthe dripping tears الخَضِلُsoaking wet
And nothing quenches grief's fire, once it has flared
within the ribs, except copious, dripping tears.
إِنif لَجَّpersists حُزنٌgrief فَلاthen no بِدعٌnovelty وَلاnor عَجَبٌwonder
أَوor قَلَّwanes صَبرٌpatience فَلاthen no لَومٌblame وَلاnor عَذَلُreproach
If grief persists, it is no novelty, no wonder;
or if patience wanes, there is no blame or reproach.
عَمريby my life لَقَدindeed فَدَحَweighed heavily الخَطبُthe calamity الَّذيwhich طَرَقَتvisited by night
بِهِwith it اللَياليthe nights وَجَلَّand was immense الحادِثُthe disaster الجَلَلُgrievous
By my life, crushing indeed was the calamity that
the nights brought; immense was that grievous disaster.
لِلَّهِto God! (an exclamation) أَيُّwhat a يَدٍhand بانَdeparted الحِمامُdeath بِهاwith it
مِنّاfrom us وَأَيَّةُand what a نَفسٍsoul غالَهاclaimed her الأَجَلُthe appointed end
God! What a hand death has borne away
from us, and what a soul the appointed end has claimed!
سَيِّدَةُlady الناسِof the people حَقّاًtruly بَعدَafter سَيِّدِهِمtheir lord
وَمَنand she who لَهاto her المَأثُراتُthe glorious deeds السُبَّقُforemost الأُوَلُfirst
Truly the lady of the people, next after their lord,
and she whose glorious deeds were foremost and first.
جَرىran its course لَهاfor her قَدَرٌa fate حَتمٌirrevocable فَحَلَّand then fell بِهاupon her
مَكروهُهُits affliction وَقَضاءٌand a decree موشِكٌimminent عَجِلُswift
An irrevocable fate ran its course for her, and upon her fell
its affliction and a decree, imminent and swift.
فَكُلُّso every عَينٍeye لَهاit has مِنof عَبرَةٍtears دِرَرٌcopious streams
وَكُلُّand every قَلبٍheart لَهُit has مِنof حَسرَةٍanguish شُغُلُpreoccupation
So every eye has streams of tears,
and every heart has grief to occupy it.
عَمَّspread everywhere البُكاءُweeping عَلَيهاfor her وَالمُصابُand bereavement بِهاat her loss
كَماjust as يَعُمُّspreads everywhere سَحابُthe cloud of الديمَةِsteady rain الهَطِلُpouring
Weeping for her and anguish at her loss have spread everywhere,
as the pouring cloud of steady rain spreads everywhere.
فَالشَرقُso the East وَالغَربُand the West مَغمورانِboth submerged مِنin أَسَفٍsorrow
باقٍenduring لِفِقدانِهاfor her loss وَالسَهلُand the plain وَالجَبَلُand the mountain
So East and West are drowned in sorrow
that endures because she is gone—as are plain and mountain.
مَثوبَةُthe reward of اللَهِGod مِمّاfor what فارَقَتshe parted from عِوَضٌcompensation
وَجَنَّةُand the Garden الخُلدِof Eternity مِماfor what خَلَّفَتshe left behind بَدَلُa replacement
God's reward compensates for what she parted from,
and the Garden of Eternity replaces what she left behind.
قُلsay لِلإِمامِto the Imam الَّذيwho آلاؤُهُhis favors جُمَلٌabundant
وَبِشرُهُand his smiling face أَمَلٌhope وَسُخطُهُand his displeasure وَجَلُdread
Tell the Imam, whose favors are abundant,
whose smiling face is hope, and whose displeasure is dread:
لَكَfor you البَقاءُenduring life عَلىthroughout الأَيّامِthe days يَقتَبِلُis renewed
وَالعُمرُand life يَمتَدُّlengthens بِالنُعمىin bliss وَيَتَّصِلُand continues
May life endure for you, renewed with passing days,
and may your years lengthen in bliss, unbroken.
وَالناسُand the people كُلُّهُمُall of them فيin كُلِّevery حادِثَةٍcalamity
فِداءُa ransom for نَعلِكَyour sandal أَنlest يَغتالَكَstrike you down unawares الزَلَلُa misstep
And all the people, in every calamity,
are ransom for your sandal, lest a misstep strike you down.
إِذاif بَقيتَyou live on لِدينِfor the faith of اللَهِGod تَكلَؤُهُyou guard it
فَكُلُّthen every رُزءٍloss صَغيرُsmall القَدرِin magnitude مُحتَمَلُbearable
If you live on to guard the faith of God,
then every loss is slight in weight and bearable.
لَئِنif indeed رُزِقتَyou were blessed with الَّتيher whom ماnot مِثلُهاher equal اِمرَأَةٌa woman
لَقَدindeed أُتيتَyou have been given الَّذيthat which لَمnot يُؤتَهُwas given it رَجُلُany man
If indeed you were blessed with her whom no woman equals,
you have surely been given what no man has been given:
صَبراًpatience وَمَعرِفَةًand knowledge بِاللَهِof God صادِقَةًtrue
وَالصَبرُand patience أَجمَلُthe finest ثَوبٍgarment حينَwhen يُبتَذَلُis worn
patience and true knowledge of God.
And patience is the finest garment when worn.
عَزَّيتَyou consoled نَفسَكَyourself عَنهاfor her loss بِالنَبِيِّwith the Prophet وَماand no
فيin الخُلدِimmortality بَعدَafter النَبِيِّthe Prophet المُصطَفىthe chosen one أَمَلُhope
You consoled yourself for her loss with the Prophet's example, and no
hope of immortality remains after the chosen Prophet.
وَكَيفَand how نَرجوwe hope for خُلوداًimmortality لَمnot يُخَصَّwere specially favored بِهِwith it
مِنfrom قَبلِناbefore us أَنبِياءُthe prophets of اللَهِGod وَالرُسُلُand the messengers
And how can we hope for an immortality not granted
to God's prophets and messengers before us?
عَمَّرَكَmay He grant you long life اللَهُGod فيin النَعماءِbliss مُبتَهِجاًrejoicing
بِهاin it وَأَعطاكَand may He give you مِنهاof it فَوقَbeyond ماwhat تَسَلُyou ask
May God grant you long life in bliss, rejoicing
in it, and give you more of it than you ask.
