May I be your ransom! Time is never free

of misfortune lamented and calamity that prompts complaint.

And these days are nothing but waystations:

    some spacious lodgings, others cramped.

Adversities have indeed refined you; and only

through smelting was fine gold purified before you.

And you are not one whose heart is shaken by harm,

nor one whose two skins split under chafing.

Yet guidance has indeed been wronged in your imprisonment,

and with you, Islam is now in the grip of polytheism.

Is there not in God's prophet Joseph an example

for one like you, imprisoned through injustice and falsehood?

He maintained beautiful patience in prison for a time,

and so beautiful patience led him to kingship.
