For faith and worldly life, I have chosen
my true friend, Abu Yahya,
المُؤثِرَwho prefers العُلياhigh honor عَلىover حَظِّهِhis own gain
وَالحَظُّand gain كُلَّall الحَظِّgain فيin العُلياhigh honor
who prefers high honor to his own gain,
and gain—all gain—lies in high honor.

Nor is wealth protected from his generosity
by any hoped-for leniency or mercy.
أَعياhe has baffled فَماso no يُطلَبُis sought شِبهٌan equal لَهُto him

He has defied comparison, so no equal to him is sought;
and a thing is abandoned when it proves too difficult.
