    I complain to you of the dark clouds’ coming before dawn,

    and lightning’s flash amid a thundering downpour,

    and how the two have turned Abu Ali’s resolve

    toward tawny wine that gleams in the eyes.

    And how many a need was thwarted, and how many a success

    procrastination put off, time after time!

    The clouds had never, when it came to harming me,

    been suspect in their early coming, nor mistrusted.

    وَعَدِّ بِها إِلى الماءِ المَعينِ

    So do not mix my cup with raincloud water;

    and turn with it instead to flowing water.
