No camp-trace at Khabt's sand-bend, nor any ruin,

answers the words of a grief-stricken man who asks.

pour upon them, I have tears that readily obey.

Will you one day lend me a glance, so you may see

among Yabrin's sands a caravan whose pace is a trot?

They hastened their departure with camel-drivers who have no homeland

but far wandering, and with camels that have no hobbles.

Sons of Zurara, here is counsel for which no payment

is hoped for from you, and speech wholly of rebuke.

    Iram perished before you only

because they were counseled for an age and would not accept.

Seeking refuge among the mountain goats, as though you

do not know that the white-footed ibex find no escape.

one lone drop from it is itself a pouring raincloud.

with sword-edges, spears, stratagems and ruses within it.

behind them, and with swords that have no flaw.

He was already fire while the greater part of the army was scattered

along the frontier, save a scant few companions with him.

How will it be, then, as he drives the night amid the roar

of an army beside whose clamor all else falls silent?

with Mashrafi swords, bearing bereavement and loss of children.

by judgment that makes the gravest calamity seem small.

any chance of surviving him, or strength to withstand him?

If a dominion has endured, never have

the days and changing fortunes lacked an onslaught like his.

Abu Sa'id, and the argument is the striking of heads.

and safety is forthcoming and pardon ready to be received—

in granting audience until masters and servants stood equal.

or if he is freely accessible, so is the sacred Corner.

the near edge of Iraq, swiftly—their very slowness is haste.

by the north wind's hands, its loose ends all in tatters.

for an Azdi one, dyed by humiliation and rout.

from Babak, while she blazes upon the others.

as a standard: since it rose aloft it has not been furled, nor have they dismounted.

according to the measure of what they said and did.

to black, so they became young again after growing middle-aged.

the Kharijites said, in their error and ignorance.

for him, he would wish himself unadorned.

his enduring traces—the plain and the mountain.

nor the gazelle whose eyes are dark with kohl.

about him and says: 'Is this a campaign or a homeward return?'

whenever booty and additional spoils come together to him.

Thu'al thanked Nabhan, and for its blessings.

toward praise, so love poetry wins no share of me.

This—and even if I voiced my very soul in your praise, I would not deem myself

to have paid what is due, even if you were granted all I ask.
