مُحَمَّدُMuhammad ماnot آمالُناour hopes بِكَواذِبِfalse
لَدَيكَwith you وَلاnor أَيّامُناour days بِشَواحِبِwan
Muhammad, our hopes are not false
with you, nor are our days wan.
دَعَوناكَwe called upon you مَدعُواًsummoned إِلىto كُلِّevery نَوبَةٍcrisis

We called upon you, one summoned to every crisis,
responding to weaken the schemes of calamities,
بِعَزمِwith the resolve of عُمومٍpaternal uncles مِنamong مَصابيحِthe luminaries of أَشعَرٍAsh'ar
وَحَزمِand the prudence of خُؤولٍmaternal uncles مِنfrom لُؤَيِّLu'ayy بنِson of غالِبِGhalib
with the resolve of paternal uncles among Ash'ar's luminaries,
and the prudence of maternal uncles from Lu'ayy ibn Ghalib.
لَغِبتَyou surely vanished مَغيبَthe vanishing of البَدرِthe full moon عَنّاfrom us وَمَنand whoever يَبِتspends the night
بِلاwithout قَمَرٍa moon يَذمُمdecries سَوادَthe blackness of الغَياهِبِdeep gloom
Indeed, you vanished from us as the full moon vanishes; whoever spends the night
without a moon decries the blackness of deep gloom.
فَكَمso how many مِنof حَنينٍa yearning ليof mine إِلىtoward الشَرقِthe East مُصعَدٍborne upward
وَإِنeven though كانَwere أَحبابيmy loved ones بِأَرضِin the land of المَيارِبِal-Mayarib (unclear reading)
How many a yearning of mine is borne aloft toward the East,
even though my loved ones are in the land of al-Mayarib.
وَماand never اِلتَقَتِclenched الأَحشاءُthe inward parts يَومَon a day of صَبابَةٍlonging
عَلىwith بُرَحاءٍanguish مِثلَlike بُعدِseparation from الأَقارِبِkinsfolk
And never, on a day of longing, have hearts clenched
with anguish like that of separation from kin.
وَلاnor اِنسَكَبَتflowed بيضُthe white ones الدُموعِof tears وَحُمرُهاand their red ones
بِحَقٍّrightfully عَلىfor مِثلِthe like of الغُيوثِrains السَواكِبِpouring
Nor have tears, both white and red, ever flowed
so rightly as for the likes of pouring rains.
رَحَلتَyou departed فَلَمso did not آنَسI find comfort بِمَشهَدِin the presence of شاهِدٍone present
وَأُبتَand you returned فَلَمso did not أَحفِلI care بِغَيبَةِabout the absence of غائِبِone absent
You departed, so I found no comfort in anyone's presence;
and you returned, so I cared nothing for anyone's absence.
قَدِمتَyou arrived فَأَقدَمتَand you brought النَدىgenerosity يَحمِلُbearing الرِضاcontentment
إِلىto كُلِّevery غَضبانٍangry person عَلىat الدَهرِTime عاتِبِreproachful
You arrived, and brought bounty bearing contentment
to all who are angry at Time and reproach it.
وَجِئتَand you came كَماas جاءَcame الرَبيعُspring مُحَرِّكاًmoving
يَدَيكَyour two hands بِأَخلاقٍwith virtues تَفيmeasure up بِالسَحائِبِto the rainclouds
And you came as spring comes, moving
your two hands with virtues that match the rainclouds.
فَعادَتso became again بِكَthrough you الأَيامُthe days زُهراًradiant كَأَنَّماas though

So through you the days became radiant again, as though
Time had unveiled in them the cheeks of young maidens.

O Abu Ja'far, no giver's gift can send me
down a path away from you, nor any donor's bounty.
فَمَنso whoever شاءَwishes فَليَبخَلthen let him be miserly وَمَنand whoever شاءَwishes فَليَجُدthen let him be generous

So let whoever wishes be miserly, and whoever wishes be generous;
your bounty has met all my needs.
وَماand whatever أَنسَI forget لاnot أَنسَI forget اِجتِذابَكَyour drawing هِمَّتيmy ambition

Whatever I forget, I shall not forget your drawing my ambition
toward you, and placing me in the most privileged rank.
صَفِيُّكَyour chosen friend مِنamong أَهلِthe practitioners of القَوافيrhymes بِرَغمِهِمagainst their wishes
وَأَنتَand you صَفِيّيmy chosen friend دونَin preference to أَهلِthe givers of المَواهِبِbounty
I am your chosen friend among the men of rhyme, against their wishes;
and you are my chosen friend above all givers of bounty.

We made it a pact between us, and so there arose
other bonds of kinship after those earlier bonds.
فَياso O خَيرَbest مَصحوبٍcompanion إِذاif أَناI لَمnot أَقُلI speak

So, best of companions, if I do not voice
my thanks to you—then know that I am the worst of companions—

عَلَيكَupon you سَراةُthe nobles of القَومِthe people عِقدَa necklace of كَواكِبِstars
in a poem strung like pearls, which seems
upon you, to the people's nobles, a necklace of stars.
