After Mubashshir and Abu ‘Ubayd,
After Mubashshir and my father Ubayd,

And Ma'yuf, noble and virtuous,

and after the father of Abu al-‘Attaf, can I hope
And after my father, father of Al-Attar, I hope
for time’s faithfulness or the nights’ pledge?
For constancy of fate or pact of nights.
شُيوخُthe elders بَنيthe sons of عُبَيدٍ‘Ubayd أَسلَمونيthey left me
شُيوخُ بَني عُبَيدٍ أَسلَموني
إِلىto رَبعٍa dwelling مِنَof الأَكفاءِpeers خالِempty
إِلى رَبعٍ مِنَ الأَكفاءِ خالِ
The elders of Banu ‘Ubayd left me
The elders of Bani Ubayd surrendered me
to a dwelling devoid of peers.
To a quarter of fitting peers.
وَرِثتُI inherited سُيوفَهُمtheir swords وَمَضواand they departed كِراماًas noble men
وَرِثتُ سُيوفَهُم وَمَضوا كِراماً
وَماand what نَفعُuse السُيوفِthe swords بِلاwithout رِجالِmen
وَما نَفعُ السُيوفِ بِلا رِجالِ
I inherited their swords, and they departed as noble men;
I inherited their swords, and they passed, generous,
and what use are swords without men?
But swords are useless without men.
