ياO اِبنَson of حَمدونَḤamdūn بنِson of إِسماIsmā- (beginning of Ismāʿīl)
يا اِبنَ حَمدونَ بنِ إِسما
عيلَ-ʿīl (completing Ismāʿīl) وَالجودُand generosity عَقيدُكyour sworn companion
عيلَ وَالجودُ عَقيدُك
O son of Ḥamdūn, son of Ismāʿīl,
O son of Hamdun son of Isma
With generosity your sworn companion.
Nobility and generosity are your creed
وَالعُلاand high renown ماwhat شادَbuilt آباfathers (word continues)
وَالعُلا ما شادَ آبا
ؤُكَyour (completing 'your fathers') قِدماًlong ago وَجُدودُكand your grandfathers
ؤُكَ قِدماً وَجُدودُك
And high renown is what your fathers built
And sublime is what your fathers built
Of old, together with your grandfathers.
With their steps and ancestors
وَنَجارُand the stock المَجدِof glory نَبعٌa nabʿ tree
وَنَجارُ المَجدِ نَبعٌ
شُقَّwas cleft مِنfrom فَرعَيهِits two branches عودُكyour stem
شُقَّ مِن فَرعَيهِ عودُك
And glory's stock is a nabʿ tree;
And the carpenter of glory is a spring
Your stem was cleft from its two branches.
Cut from its two branches is your rod
عَظُمَتhas grown great فيthrough فَضلِكَyour bounty النِعthe blessing (word continues)
عَظُمَت في فَضلِكَ النِع
مَةُcompletion of 'the blessing' وَاللَهُand God يَزيدُكgrants you more
مَةُ وَاللَهُ يَزيدُك
Through your bounty, the blessing has grown great,
Greatened in your bounty the bless-
And God grants you more.
ings and Allah increases you
لاmay ... not زَكاprosper سَعيُthe striving of مُساعيone competing with
لا زَكا سَعيُ مُساعي
كَyou وَلاّستَعلىnor may ... rise high حَسودُكyour envier
كَ وَلاّستَعلى حَسودُك
May your rival's striving not prosper,
No equal the efforts of your efforts
Nor may your envier rise high.
Nor rise above your envious
أَيُسَوّيcan ... be equated? بِكَwith you قَومٌa people
أَيُسَوّي بِكَ قَومٌ
وَمَواليهمand their masters عَبيدُكyour slaves
وَمَواليهم عَبيدُك
Can any people be put on a par with you,
Can a people equate with you
When their masters are your slaves?
When their clients are your servants
