لِلفَضلِAl-Fadl has أَخلاقٌvirtues يَلِقنَbefit بِفَضلِهِhis excellence
لِلفَضلِ أَخلاقٌ يَلِقنَ بِفَضلِهِ
ماnot كانَwas يَرغَبُturn away مِثلَهاtheir like عَنfrom مِثلِهِhis like
ما كانَ يَرغَبُ مِثلَها عَن مِثلِهِ
Al-Fadl has virtues befitting his excellence,
Such virtues would never shun a man like him.
جَمَعَhe gathered المَكارِمَnoble virtues كُلَّهاall of them بِخَلائِقٍin qualities
جَمَعَ المَكارِمَ كُلَّها بِخَلائِقٍ
لَمnot تَجتَمِعcome together فيin سَيِّدٍa lord مِنfrom قَبلِهِbefore him
لَم تَجتَمِع في سَيِّدٍ مِن قَبلِهِ
He gathered all noble virtues in qualities
That had never come together in a lord before him.
فَمَتىso whenever يَقِفhe stops تَقِفِstops العُلاglory وَمَتىand whenever يَسِرhe travels
فَمَتى يَقِف تَقِفِ العُلا وَمَتى يَسِر
مُتَوَجِّهاًheading onward تَسِرِtravels العُلاglory فيin ظِلِّهِhis shadow
مُتَوَجِّهاً تَسِرِ العُلا في ظِلِّهِ
So whenever he stops, glory stops; and whenever he travels
Onward, glory travels in his shadow.
إِحسانُهُhis generosity دَركُattainment الرَجاءِhope وَقَولُهُand his word
إِحسانُهُ دَركُ الرَجاءِ وَقَولُهُ
عِندَat المَواعِدِpromises شُعبَةٌa branch مِنof فِعلِهِhis action
عِندَ المَواعِدِ شُعبَةٌ مِن فِعلِهِ
His generosity is hope fulfilled, and his word
When he promises is a branch of his deeds.
قَسَمَhe distributed التِلادَancestral wealth مُباعِداًto those far away وَمُقارِباًand to those near
قَسَمَ التِلادَ مُباعِداً وَمُقارِباً
وَرَأىand he deemed سَبيلَthe path الحَمدِpraise أَصلَحَthe best of سُبلِهِhis paths
وَرَأى سَبيلَ الحَمدِ أَصلَحَ سُبلِهِ
He distributed his ancestral wealth to those far and near,
And deemed the path to praise the best of his paths.
لَمnot تُجهِدِtaxed الأَجوادَthe generous غايَةُa summit سُؤدُدٍeminence
لَم تُجهِدِ الأَجوادَ غايَةُ سُؤدُدٍ
إِلّاbut تَناوَلَهاhe attained it بِأَهوَنِat the easiest رُسلِهِhis unhurried pace
إِلّا تَناوَلَها بِأَهوَنِ رُسلِهِ
No summit of eminence ever taxed the generous
But he attained it at his easiest pace.
يُنبيكَtells you عَنof قُربِnearness النُبُوَّةِprophethood هَديُهُhis conduct
يُنبيكَ عَن قُربِ النُبُوَّةِ هَديُهُ
وَالشَيءُand a thing يُخبِرُtells بَعضَهُits part عَنof كُلِّهِits whole
وَالشَيءُ يُخبِرُ بَعضَهُ عَن كُلِّهِ
His conduct tells you of his nearness to prophethood,
And a thing's part tells of its whole.
وَبِحَسبِهِand sufficient for him المَأمونُal-Ma'mun وَالمَهدِيُّand al-Mahdi وَالمَنand al-Man-
وَبِحَسبِهِ المَأمونُ وَالمَهدِيُّ وَالمَن
صورُsur (completing al-Mansur) مِنin place of كُثرِabundance الفَعالِdeeds وَقُلِّهِand their scarcity
صورُ مِن كُثرِ الفَعالِ وَقُلِّهِ
And sufficient for him are al-Ma'mun, al-Mahdi, and al-Man-
sur, in place of deeds, be they many or few.
شَرَفٌhonor أَباO father of العَبّاسِal-Abbas قُمتَyou upheld بِحَقِّهِits due
شَرَفٌ أَبا العَبّاسِ قُمتَ بِحَقِّهِ
فَهَجَرتَso you shunned كُلَّevery دَنيئَةٍbase deed مِنfor أَجلِهِits sake
فَهَجَرتَ كُلَّ دَنيئَةٍ مِن أَجلِهِ
An honor, Abu al-Abbas, whose due you have upheld;
So you shunned every base deed for its sake.
اللَهُGod يَشهَدُbears witness وَهوَand He أَفضَلُthe best شاهِدٍwitness
اللَهُ يَشهَدُ وَهوَ أَفضَلُ شاهِدٍ
أَنَّthat ابنَthe son of عَمِّthe paternal uncle of أَبيكَyour father أَفضَلُthe best of رُسلِهِHis messengers
أَنَّ ابنَ عَمِّ أَبيكَ أَفضَلُ رُسلِهِ
God bears witness, and He is the best witness,
That your father's paternal cousin is the best of His messengers.
