أَياO مَنone whom تَجَنُّبُهُavoiding him مُعضِلُdifficult
وَمَنand one whose كُلُّall أَفعالِهِhis deeds مُشكِلُperplexing
O you whom it is hard to avoid,
And whose every deed is perplexing:
سَأَمنَحُكَI shall grant you الهَجرَestrangement لاnot عَنout of قِلىًhatred
وَلاand not أَنَّنيthat I لَكَwith regard to you مُستَثقِلُfinding burdensome
I shall grant you estrangement, not out of hatred,
Nor because I find you burdensome.
وَلاand not قائِلٌsaying فيكَof you إِلّاexcept الجَميthe beauti-
لَ-ful (completes the preceding word) وَإِنand although كانَwas ماwhat جِئتَyou did لاnot يَجمُلُis becoming
Nor will I say of you anything but what is beauti-
-ful, though what you have done is not becoming.
وَلَكِنَّand yet عُذرَكَyour excuse بَعدَafter الوَفاءِloyalty
وَالعُذرُand the excuse أَقبَحُthe ugliest ماwhat يُفعَلُis done
But your excuse after loyalty—
And an excuse is the ugliest thing one can offer.
وَكَمand how much جاءَنيreached me عَنكَfrom you مِنof مَنطِقٍspeech
يَكادُalmost الحَليمُthe forbearing man لَهُbecause of it يَجهَلُacts rashly
And how much speech from you has reached me
That nearly makes a forbearing man act rashly!
تَصامَمتُI feigned deafness عَنهُto it كَأَنas though قُلتَهُyou said it
لِغَيريto someone other than me وَسَمعيand my hearing بِهِby it مُثقَلُburdened
I feigned deafness to it, as though you had said it
To someone other than me, while my hearing was burdened by it.
وَقُلتُand I said قَبيحٌan ugly deed مَضىhas passed مُدبِراًretreating
سَيَتبَعُهُwill follow it الحَسَنُthe good deed المُجمِلُthe gracious
And I said: an ugly deed has passed, retreating;
A gracious good deed will follow it.
وَعاقِبَةُand the outcome of الصَبرِpatience مَحمودَةٌpraiseworthy
وَلَكِنand yet أَخوthe brother of الخُرقِfolly مُستَعجِلُimpatient
And the outcome of patience is praiseworthy,
Yet the brother of folly is impatient.
