قُل لِاِبنِ دينَرٍ رَسيلِ القَطرِ
إِذاwhen اِستَهَلَّpours forth بِالنَوالِwith bounty الغَمرِabundant
إِذا اِستَهَلَّ بِالنَوالِ الغَمرِ
Say to Ibn Dinar, the rain’s peer,
Say to Ibn Dinar, the rain’s peer,
when he breaks forth in a downpour of abundant gifts:
when he pours forth abundant bounty:
يَكذِبُproves false ظَنّيmy expectation أَوor يَشيبُturns gray شِعريmy poetry
يَكذِبُ ظَنّي أَو يَشيبُ شِعري
وَأَنتَand you بَحرٌa sea وَأَميرُand commander of البَحرِthe sea
وَأَنتَ بَحرٌ وَأَميرُ البَحرِ
Will my expectation prove false, or my hair turn gray,
My expectation proves false, or my poetry turns gray,
while you are a sea—and prince of the sea?
while you are a sea and the commander of the sea.
