God has indeed sustained the caliphate after
God held the caliphate after it faltered,
it faltered, and saved its flock from being frightened away,
And its flock avoided being scattered.

وَلَوand if لَمnot يَقُمfulfill لِلمُسلِمينَfor the Muslims بِحَقِّهاwith its rightful due

And had he not fulfilled its obligations toward the Muslims,
Had he not stood firmly for the Muslims’ rights,
the good in its outcomes would have been left as evil.
Fine consequences would be denied, unrecognized.
وَلَمّاand when بَداhe appeared مِنfrom سُدَّةِthe threshold المُلكِof kingship طالِعاًrising into view

And when he rose into view from the royal threshold,
When he rose like the beauty of kingship beaming,
we recalled in him the best of caliphs, Jaʿfar:
We recalled the best caliph, virtuous Ja’far.

the traits of one whose hands are outstretched toward generosity,
Of outstretched hands in bounty and face
and a face in which generosity shone, and so it beamed.
That generosity illuminated and gleamed.

The blessings of the earth came from every direction,
Earth’s blessings came from every direction,
and the branch of life became leafy and green.
And life’s branch flourished fresh and green.
وَقَدand already خَبَّرَproclaimed الفَتحُthe victory المُعَجَّلُswift; hastened رَنَّناunclear; apparently a corruption of 'that we' اِقverb fragment, continued next line
تَبَلناهُwe welcomed him (with the preceding fragment) مَيمونَauspicious القِيامِin his accession مُظَفَّراvictorious
And the swift victory has already proclaimed [apparently: that we]
Swift opening victory gave us joy—
welcomed him, auspicious in his accession, victorious.
We met it auspiciously triumphant and spearheading.
