لاnot يُحمَدُis praised السَجلُthe full bucket حَتّىuntil يُحكَمَare securely fastened الوَذَمُthe leather thongs
لا يُحمَدُ السَجلُ حَتّى يُحكَمَ الوَذَمُ
وَلاand not تُرَدُّare repaid بِغَيرِby anyone other than الواصِلِone who maintains ties النِعَمُblessings
وَلا تُرَدُّ بِغَيرِ الواصِلِ النِعَمُ
A full bucket is not praised until its leather thongs are secured,
Praise is withheld until blame is judged,
nor are blessings repaid except by one who maintains ties.
And bounty is not repelled except with inseparability.
وَفيand among الجَواهِرِjewels أَشباهٌcounterparts مُشاكِلَةٌresembling one another
وَفي الجَواهِرِ أَشباهٌ مُشاكِلَةٌ
وَلَيسَand do not تَشتَبِهُresemble one another الأَنوارُthe lights وَالظُلَمُand darkness
وَلَيسَ تَشتَبِهُ الأَنوارُ وَالظُلَمُ
And among jewels are counterparts that resemble one another,
Among jewels there are resemblances of similarities,
but light and darkness are not alike.
Lights do not resemble darkness.
وَنَحنُand we فيwithin كَنَفَيthe two sheltering sides of حالٍa condition مُساعِدَةٍfavorable
وَنَحنُ في كَنَفَي حالٍ مُساعِدَةٍ
كُلٌّeach عَلىupon رَعيِهِhis observance of الميثاقَthe covenant مُعتَزِمِresolved
كُلٌّ عَلى رَعيِهِ الميثاقَ مُعتَزِمِ
And we are within the sheltering wings of favorable fortune,
We are in the care of a helping state,
each resolved to keep his covenant,
Each bound by a covenant to guard his flock.
كَوارِدِlike one coming to water الخِمسِthe fifth-day watering شَهرَthe month of القَيظِscorching summer heat جادَgave generously لَهُfor him
كَوارِدِ الخِمسِ شَهرَ القَيظِ جادَ لَهُ
حِسيٌa sandy waterhole وَمَدَّand spread عَلَيهِover him ظِلُّهُits shade السَلَمُthe acacia
حِسيٌ وَمَدَّ عَلَيهِ ظِلُّهُ السَلَمُ
like one arriving for water on the fifth day, in the month of scorching heat, for whom
Like the downpours of the five, the month of blazing heat yielded for him
a sandy waterhole gave freely, and acacia spread its shade over him.
A retreat, and its shade stretched over him a ladder.
أَلهَتكَdistracted you عَنfrom حاجَةٍa need ضَيَّعتَyou neglected حُرمَتَهاits claim to respect
أَلهَتكَ عَن حاجَةٍ ضَيَّعتَ حُرمَتَها
وِلايَةٌa governorship وَدَواعيand the promptings of النَفسِthe soul تُتَّهَمُare suspect
وِلايَةٌ وَدَواعي النَفسِ تُتَّهَمُ
You were distracted from a need whose rightful claim you neglected
A jurisdiction distracted you from attending to a need you neglected,
by a governorship—and the soul's promptings are suspect.
While your soul’s tendencies are blamed.
أَحينَwas it when قُمتَyou rose مِنَof الأَيّامِthe days فيat كَتَدٍa ridge
أَحينَ قُمتَ مِنَ الأَيّامِ في كَتَدٍ
كَماjust as أَنارَshone بِنارِwith the fire of الموقِدِthe kindler العَلَمُthe mountain
كَما أَنارَ بِنارِ الموقِدِ العَلَمُ
Was it when you rose to the crest of fortune,
When you stood up from the days in despondency,
as a mountain shone with the fire of its kindler,
As the standard was illumined by the fire of the light.
أَنشَبتَyou entangled نَفسَكَyourself فيin خَضراءَa green expanse مُغدِقَةٍrichly watered
أَنشَبتَ نَفسَكَ في خَضراءَ مُغدِقَةٍ
وَأَفسَدَتكَand spoiled you عَلىagainst إِخوانِكَyour brothers النِعَمُblessings
وَأَفسَدَتكَ عَلى إِخوانِكَ النِعَمُ
that you entangled yourself in a green, richly watered expanse,
You clung to a soft, shaded green
and blessings turned you against your brothers?
And bounty corrupted you against your brethren.
