حَبيبٌa beloved سَرىtraveled by night فيin خُفيَةٍsecrecy وَعَلىand in ذُعرِfear
يَجوبُtraverses الدُجىthe darkness حَتّىuntil اِلتَقَيناwe met عَلىby قَدرِfate
A beloved traveled by night in secrecy and fear,
traversing the darkness until we met as fate ordained.
تَشَكَّكتُI doubted فيهِabout him مِنfrom سُرورٍjoy وَخِلتُهُand I thought him
خَيالاًa phantom أَتىthat came فيin النَومِsleep مِنfrom طَيفِهِhis dream-image يَسريtraveling by night
So great was my joy that I doubted he was real, and thought him
a dream-vision of him, come gliding through sleep.
وَأَفرَطتُand I went to excess مِنfrom وَجدٍardent longing بِهِfor him فَدَرىso learned بِناof us
عَلىat ساعَةِthe hour of الهِجرانِparting مَنthose who لَمnot يَكُنhad been يَدريaware
I was so unrestrained in my longing for him that we became known,
at the hour of parting, to those who had not known.
وَماand not الحُبُّlove ماthat which وَرَّيتَyou spoke evasively عَنهُabout it تَسَتُّراًseeking concealment
وَلَكِنَّهُbut it is ماthat which مِلتَyou inclined فيهِconcerning it إِلىtoward الجَهرِopen declaration
Love is not what you veil to keep secret,
but what you are drawn to proclaim aloud.
أَتىhe came مُستَجيراًseeking refuge بيwith me مِنَfrom البَينِseparation تائِباًrepentant
إِلَيَّto me مِنَfrom الصَدِّrejection المُبَرِّحِagonizing وَالهَجرِand desertion
He came seeking refuge with me from separation, returning repentantly
to me from his agonizing rejection and desertion.
فَلَمso not يَستَطِعcould قَلبيmy heart اِمتِناعاًresistance مِنَagainst الهَوىlove
وَلَمand not تَستَطِعcould نَفسيmy soul سَبيلاًa way إِلىto الصَبرِpatience
So my heart could not hold out against love,
nor could my soul find a way to patience.
سَقانيhe gave me drink بِكَأسَيهِwith his two cups وَعَينَيهِand his two eyes قادِراًcapable
بِأَلحاظِهِwith his glances دونَwithout المُدامِwine عَلىof سُكريmy intoxication
He gave me drink from his two cups and his eyes, though able
with his glances, without wine, to make me drunk.
وَأَقسَمَand he swore ليto me أَلّاnot to يَخونَbetray مَوَدَّتيmy affection
وَإِنand even if أَسرَفَwent to excess الواشيthe talebearer وَكَثَّرَand said much ذوone possessed of الغِمرِrancor
And he swore to me never to betray my affection,
even if the talebearer went to extremes and the spiteful man said still more.
وَلَمand not أَنسَناI have forgotten us عِندَat التَلاقيthe meeting وَضَمَّناand drew us together
سَوالِفُsides of the neck نَحرٍa breast مِنof مَشوقٍa yearning lover إِلىto نَحرِa breast
I have not forgotten us at our meeting, drawn together,
neck to neck, one longing breast against another.
وَتَكرارَناand our repeating ذاكَthat العِناقَembrace إِذاwhenever اِنقَضَتended
لَناfor us عَبرَةٌa tear عادَتreturned لَناfor us عَبرَةٌa tear تَجريflowing
and our repeating that embrace: whenever there was an end
to one tear of ours, another came streaming down.
أَحاديثُconversations شَكوىcomplaint مِنfrom مُحِبّينَlovers لاnot تَنيcease
تُعِلُّsicken فُؤاداًa heart بِالصَبابَةِwith ardent longing أَوor تُبريheal
Words of complaint from lovers, never ceasing
to sicken a heart with longing, or to heal it.
تَعَجَّبتُI marveled مِنat فِرعَونَPharaoh إِذwhen ظَنَّhe thought أَنَّهُthat he was
إِلَهٌa god لِأَنَّbecause النيلَthe Nile مِنfrom تَحتِهِbeneath him يَجريflows
I marveled at Pharaoh when he thought himself
a god because the Nile flowed beneath him.
وَلَوand if شاهَدَhe had beheld الدُنياthe world وَجامِعَand the uniter of مُلكِهاits dominion
لَقَلَّwould have seemed small لَدَيهِto him ماwhat يُكَثِّرُhe deemed great مِنof مِصرِEgypt
Had he beheld the world and the one who unites its dominion,
what he thought so great in Egypt would have seemed small to him.
وَلَوand if بَصُرَتhad seen عَيناهُhis two eyes بِالزَوِّat al-Zaww لَاِزدَرىhe would have scorned
حَقيرَthe paltry share of الَّذيwhat نالَتhad gained يَداهُhis two hands مِنَof الأَمرِpower
Had his eyes beheld al-Zaww, he would have scorned
the paltry measure of power his hands had won.
إِذاًthen لَرَأىhe would have seen قَصراًa palace عَلىupon ظَهرِthe back of لُجَّةٍdeep water
يَروحُtravels at evening وَيَغدوand travels in the morning فَوقَabove أَمواجِهاits waves يَجريgliding
Then he would have seen a palace upon the back of the deep,
traveling evening and morning, gliding over its waves.
تُصادُare hunted الوُحوشُwild beasts فيalong حِفافَيboth sides of طَريقِهِits course
وَتَستَنزِلُand are brought down الطَيرُthe birds العَواليhigh-flying عَلىby قَسرِforce
Wild beasts are hunted along both sides of its course,
and high-flying birds are forced down.
وَلَمand not أَرَI have seen كَالمُعتَزِّlike al-Mu'tazz إِذwhen راحَhe went at evening موفِياًstanding aloft
عَلَيهِupon it بِوَجهٍwith a face لاحَthat shone فيin الرَونَقِsplendor النَضرِfresh
And I have seen none like al-Mu'tazz, standing aloft at evening,
upon it, his face shining with fresh splendor.
مَلِيّاًwell able بِأَنto يَجلوdispel الظَلامَthe darkness بِغُرَّةٍwith a radiant brow
تَخاضَعُbows humbly إِكباراًin reverence لَهاbefore it غُرَّةُthe bright brow of الفَجرِdawn
well able to dispel darkness with a radiant brow
before which dawn's own bright brow bows in reverence.
إِذاwhen اِهتَزَّhe thrilled غِبَّafter الأَريَحِيَّةِgenerous ardor وَالنَدىand bounty
وَأَسفَرَand beamed فيin ضَوءِthe light of الطَلاقَةِcheerful openness وَالبِشرِand good cheer
When he thrills in the wake of generosity and bounty,
and beams in the light of openness and good cheer,
وَقابَلَهُand faced him بَدرُthe full moon of السَماءِthe sky بِوَجهِهِwith its face
فَبَدرٌthen a full moon عَلىabove بَدرٍa full moon وَبَحرٌand a sea عَلىabove بَحرِa sea
and heaven's full moon meets him face to face,
then a full moon above a full moon, and a sea above a sea.
رَأَيتُI saw بَهاءَthe splendor of المُلكِkingship مُجتَمِعاًgathered لَهُfor him
وَديباجَةَand the brocade of الدُنياthe world وَمَكرُمَةَand the nobility of الدَهرِthe age
I saw the splendor of kingship gathered in him,
and the world's brocade, and the nobility of the age.
وَخِرقٌand a generous nobleman مَتىwhenever اِمتَدَّتstretched forth يَداهُhis two hands بِنائِلٍwith a gift
فَماthen not النَيلُthe bounty received مِنهاfrom them بِالزَهيدِpaltry وَلاnor نَزرِscant
And he is a generous nobleman: whenever his hands reach out with a gift,
what one receives from them is neither paltry nor scant.
مَواهِبُgifts مَكَّنَenabled الفَقيرَthe poor مِنَto attain الغِنىwealth
مِراراًrepeatedly وَأَعدَينَand aided المُقِلَّthe needy عَلىagainst المُثريthe wealthy
Gifts that enabled the poor to attain wealth,
time and again, and helped the needy prevail over the rich.

May you live on, Commander of the Faithful, for truly
your continued life is the people's ease, putting hardship to flight.

I shall strive in gratitude for your favors; indeed, I
regard ingratitude for blessings as a kind of unbelief.
