كَمhow many فيamong بَنيsons of الرومِthe Romans مِنof أُعجوبَةٍa marvel مَثَلِa paragon
كَم في بَني الرومِ مِن أُعجوبَةٍ مَثَلِ
وَفيand among بَنيsons of العُربِthe Arabs مِنof ذيpossessing نَجدَةٍvalor بَطَلِa hero
وَفي بَني العُربِ مِن ذي نَجدَةٍ بَطَلِ
Among the sons of Rome, how many a wondrous paragon!
How many wondrous paragons there are among the sons of Rome,
And among the sons of the Arabs, how many a valiant hero!
And among the sons of the Arabs, how many a valiant hero!
إِنّاindeed we بِأَسيافِناwith our swords نَعلوwe overpower أَكابِرَهُمtheir great men
إِنّا بِأَسيافِنا نَعلو أَكابِرَهُم
قَسراًby force وَتَقتُلَناand slay us الوِلدانُthe boys بِالمُقَلِwith the eyes
قَسراً وَتَقتُلَنا الوِلدانُ بِالمُقَلِ
With our swords, indeed, we overcome their great men
Indeed, with our swords we overpower their great men
by force—yet their youths kill us with their eyes.
By force, yet the boys slay us with their eyes.
إِذاwhen اِنصَرَفناwe return بِقَتلىwith slain men مِنfrom among سَراتِهِمِtheir nobles
إِذا اِنصَرَفنا بِقَتلى مِن سَراتِهِمِ
نالواthey obtained التِراتَvengeance بِلَحظِwith the gaze of الأَعيُنِthe eyes النُجُلِwide
نالوا التِراتَ بِلَحظِ الأَعيُنِ النُجُلِ
When we turn back, having slain men among their nobles,
When we return, having slain some of their nobles,
they exact their vengeance with the gaze of wide eyes.
