أَرادَhe wished سُلُوّاًforgetfulness عَنof سُلَيمىSulayma وَعَنand of هِندِHind
فَغالَبَهُthen overpowered him غَيُّwaywardness السَفاهِfolly عَلىover الرُشدِsound judgment
He sought release from love of Sulayma and of Hind,
He wished to forget Sulayma and Hind,
but wayward folly overpowered him, defeating sound judgment.
But folly's waywardness overcame his better judgment.
وَأَضحىand he became جَنيباًone led along لِلمَطالِby delay مُجانِباًturning away
لِناصِحِهِfrom his counselor فيin الغَيِّerror طَوعاًobedient لِمَنto whoever يُردىbrings ruin
Through procrastination he became estranged, shunning
And he was led along by delay, turning away
his sincere counselor amid error, yet obeying whoever leads him to ruin.
From his counselor, lost in error, obedient to whoever brings ruin.
إِذاwhen باكَرَتهُcome early to him غادِياتُmorning visitants هُمومِهِhis cares
أَراحَhe brings at evening عَلَيهاagainst them الراحَwine حَمراءَred كَالوَردِlike roses
Whenever the morning visitations of his cares came early,
When the morning visitants of his cares come early to him,
he poured red wine over them, red as roses.
He brings wine against them at evening, red as roses.
كَأَنَّas though سَناهاits radiance بِالعَشِيِّat evening لِشَربِهاto its drinkers
تَبَلُّجُthe beaming of عيسىIsa حينَwhen يَلفُظُhe utters بِالوَعدِa promise
As though its evening radiance, when it is drunk,
Its evening radiance seems to those who drink it
were Isa’s radiant face when he utters a promise.
Like Isa's beaming face as he utters a promise.
كَأَنas though نَعَمٌyes فيin فيهِhis mouth حينَwhen يَقولُهاhe says it
مُجاجَةُa mouthful مِسكٍmusk بانَappeared فيin ذائِبِmelted الشُهدِhoney
As though the “yes” in his mouth whenever he says it
The 'yes' in his mouth, as he speaks it, seems
were a mouth-drop of musk, gleaming in melted honey.
A mouthful of musk revealed in melted honey.
لَهُhe has ضِحكَةٌa smile عِندَat النَوالِthe giving of gifts كَأَنَّهاas though it
تَباشيرَfirst glad signs بَرقٍlightning بَعدَafter بُعدٍa long separation مِنَfrom العَهدِthe last encounter
When he bestows, his laughter is as though it were
He has a smile when giving, as though it were
the first glad gleams of lightning after it has long been unseen.
The first flashes of lightning after a long absence.
تَذَكَّرتُI recalled أَيّاماًdays مَضىhas passed ليfor me نَعيمُهاtheir bliss
بِتَقديمِهِthrough his giving precedence إيّايَto me فيin الهَزلِjest وَالجِدِّand earnestness
I remembered days whose happiness has passed from me,
I recalled days whose bliss for me has passed,
when he preferred me, in jest and in earnest.
When he gave me precedence in jest and in earnest.
أَصولُI assail عَلىagainst دَهريmy fate كَصَولَةِlike the onslaught of فَضلِهِhis bounty
عَلىagainst عَدَمِthe poverty of الراجينَthose who hope بِالبَذلِthrough giving وَالرِفدِand aid
I would assail Fate with an onslaught like that of his bounty
I would assail my fate, as his bounty assails
upon supplicants’ want—through generous giving and aid.
The poverty of those who hope, with gifts and aid.
فَغَيَّرَthen changed مِنهُwithin him القَلبَthe heart عَنaway from حُسنِthe goodness of رَأيِهِhis opinion
أَكاذيبُlies جاءَتcame مِنfrom لَئيمٍa base man وَمِنand from وَغدِa knave
Then lies turned his heart from the good opinion he had of me—
Then his heart was turned away from his favorable opinion
lies brought by an ignoble man, by a base wretch.
By lies that came from a base man and a knave.
تَغَنَّمَhe took advantage of مِنّيfrom me غَيبَتيmy absence وَحُضورَهُand his presence
وَأَنand that لَيسَthere was not ليfor me مِنfrom دونِin front of مَرماهُhis shot مِنany رَدِّdefense
He seized as an advantage against me my absence and his presence,
He took advantage of my absence and his presence,
and the fact that I had no means to repel him before he attained his aim.
And of my having no defense against his shot.
فَإِنso if يَكُthere be جُرمُan offense كانَthat occurred أَوor هَفوَةٌa lapse خَلَتthat has passed
فَإِنَّكَthen indeed you أَعلىare higher مِنthan خَطايَmy error وَمِنand than عَمديmy deliberate wrongdoing
If some offense occurred, or some lapse has gone by,
So if there was an offense, or a lapse now past,
you stand too high for either my inadvertent error or my deliberate wrong.
Then you are above my error and my deliberate wrongdoing.
وَمَنand whoever مَلَكَتheld in their power كَفّاهُhis two hands مَنone who كانَwas مُذنِباًguilty
فَقُدرَتُهُthen his power تُنسيmakes him forget وَتَذهَبُand does away بِالحِقدِwith rancor
Whoever holds a guilty man in his two hands—
And whoever holds an offender in his hands—
his power makes the offense forgotten and sweeps rancor away.
His power makes him forget and drives away rancor.
فَشُكريso my gratitude مَتابيmy repentance وَاِعتِذاريand my apology وَسيلَتيmy means of appeal
وَماand what قَدَّمَتhave bestowed كَفّاكَyour two hands مِنof مِنَّةٍa favor عِنديupon me
Thus my gratitude is my repentance, my apology my means of appeal,
So my gratitude is my repentance; my apology is my plea,
and whatever favor your two hands bestowed remains with me.
Together with the favors your hands have bestowed on me.
وَإِنand though كانَhas شِعريmy verse جاءَcome بِالعُذرِwith an apology قاصِداًdeliberately
فَماyet not كانَwas ذَنبيmy offense بِاِعتِمادٍby design وَلاnor قَصدِwith intent
Though my verse has come deliberately bearing an apology,
Though my verse has brought an apology deliberately,
my offense was neither deliberate nor intended.
My offense was neither by design nor with intent.
