اللَهُ جارُكَ في اِنطِلاقِك

اللَهُ جارُكَ في اِنطِلاقِك

تِلقاءَ شامِكَ أَو عِراقِك

تِلقاءَ شامِكَ أَو عِراقِك

May God be your protector as you depart,

God is your companion in your travels

Toward your Sham or your Iraq.

Whether towards your north or your south

لا تَعذُلَنّي في مَسي

لا تَعذُلَنّي في مَسي

ري يَومَ سِرتُ وَلَم أُلاقِك

ري يَومَ سِرتُ وَلَم أُلاقِك

Do not reproach me for my journey

Do not blame me for leaving one night

On the day I set out without meeting you.

Without seeing you before I set out

إِنّي خَشيتُ مَواقِفاً

إِنّي خَشيتُ مَواقِفاً

لِلبَينِ تَسفَحُ غَربَ ماقِك

لِلبَينِ تَسفَحُ غَربَ ماقِك

Indeed, I feared scenes

I feared encounters

Of parting that would make tears stream from your eye's inner corner.

That would make separation spill over with sadness

وَعَلِمتُ أَنَّ بُكاءَنا

وَعَلِمتُ أَنَّ بُكاءَنا

حَسبَ اِشتِياقي وَاِشتِياقِك

حَسبَ اِشتِياقي وَاِشتِياقِك

And I knew that our weeping

And I knew our tears

Would be in proportion to my longing and yours.

Would suffice for my longing and your longing

وَذَكَرتُ ما يَجِدُ المُوَد

وَذَكَرتُ ما يَجِدُ المُوَد

دِعُ عِندَ ضَمِّكَ وَاِعتِناقِك

دِعُ عِندَ ضَمِّكَ وَاِعتِناقِك

And I remembered what the one bidding farewell feels

And I remembered what intimacy feels

When clasping you and embracing you.

Leave out of your embrace and hug

فَتَرَكتُ ذاكَ تَعَمُّفاً

فَتَرَكتُ ذاكَ تَعَمُّفاً

وَخَرَجتُ أَهرُبُ مِن فِراقِك

وَخَرَجتُ أَهرُبُ مِن فِراقِك

So I forwent that [the final word is unclear],

So I left that as pretense

And went out fleeing from parting with you.

And went out fleeing from your separation
