لَمّاwhen حَصَلناwe reached عَلىupon العَشرِthe ten days الَّتيthat بَقِيَتremained
لَمّا حَصَلنا عَلى العَشرِ الَّتي بَقِيَت
وَأَدبَرَand turned away الشَهرُthe month عَنّاfrom us بَعدَafter إِقبالِcoming
وَأَدبَرَ الشَهرُ عَنّا بَعدَ إِقبالِ
When we reached the ten days that remained,
When we reached the ten days that remained
And the month turned away from us after its coming,
And the month turned away from us after prosperity

طَعمَthe taste of الصِيامِfasting حَديثاًrecently طَعمَthe taste of شَوّالِShawwal
طَعمَ الصِيامِ حَديثاً طَعمَ شَوّالِ
And my palate sensed—after it had spat out
And my desires sensed, after having relinquished
The taste of fasting just recently—the taste of Shawwal,
The taste of fasting, the fresh taste of Shawwal
أُريتُI was shown ذاone possessing رَبعَةٍmiddling stature فيin العَينِthe eye مِنowing to قِصَرٍshortness
أُريتُ ذا رَبعَةٍ في العَينِ مِن قِصَرٍ

وَذاكَ أَطوَلُ مِن شاهِ بنِ ميكالِ
I was shown a man of middling stature, short to the eye,
I was shown a moon in the eye from a palace
Yet that man was taller than Shah ibn Mikal.
And that is taller than Shah Bin Mikal
