وَثَناءٌand acclaim مُجاوِزُexceeding المِقدارِthe measure
وَثَناءٌ مُجاوِزُ المِقدارِ
Al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Ṣāʿid has praise for me,
For Alaa, son of Sa’eed, I have praise
and acclaim exceeding all measure.
And commendation beyond measure.

He freely offers his smiles, but is stingy with what
Generous with all he has, careful with each
he holds in dirhams and dinars.
Dirham and dinar that he can treasure.

تُ لِمِثلِ العَلاءِ بِالزُوّارِ
I visited him against my will, and I was not
I visited him reluctantly, for I
one to visit the likes of al-ʿAlāʾ.
Was not one to visit the great Alaa.
فَحَصَلناso we obtained عَلىupon ثَناءٍacclaim وَمَدحٍand praise

وَاِنصِرافٍ بِاللَيلِ في الطَيّارِ
So we gained acclaim and praise,
Yet we left with praise and commendation
and a departure by night aboard the swift boat.
As we rode through the night sky afar.
