I swore to her by God on the day of parting,

and by the passion of my heart, so bound to her,

and by our pledge: no gift, however small, is wasted

on me, nor does an old pledge grow threadbare.

And I confided to her a complaint that revealed my burning heartache,

and tears that, whenever they testify to sorrow, are believed.

And I truly fear her for myself when she turns away,

and fear the spiteful for her, and guard against them.

And I, though she withholds her affection from me,

surely rejoice in her phantom that keeps me sleepless.

It would vex the slanderers, if they knew of them—

those nights of ours when we exchange visits and meet.

How many a thirst of longing have I cooled

with a phantom that, whenever it visits, visits in the night's darkness.

I close my eyelid upon it, clinging

to it as the hovering drowsiness clears away.

Truly, union with beautiful women is not to be hoped for,

nor is the heart freed from bondage to the beauties.

I wished the sword's whiteness, on the day they met me,

had been at my hair's parting instead of the whiteness of gray hair.

And the beauties turned away as my locks flashed white,

and withheld their 'At your service!' when I spoke.

If you wish never to reproach a lover

for grief from love's torment, then fall in love.

And whenever I went far from a dear friend, I would grieve

for him; whenever I departed from home, I yearned.

I looked back from the heights of Damascus, while between us lay

Lebanon's rocky heights, like suspended clouds,

toward white al-Hirah and then al-Karkh, after

I had condemned my stay between Busra and Jilliq.

Toward the twin strongholds of my glory, the two homes of my dwelling,

and the goal of my loving backward gaze and yearning.

    Royal pavilions turn their faces

toward a delightful view over the Tigris's open expanse.

As though the dark-green gardens around them were clothed

in varied striped fabrics of pieced-together brocade.

When the wind stirs their blossoms, there waft

their fragrances, from pods of musk broken open.

The white domes seem, while the sun shines brightly

and exchanges smiles with them, like halves of eggs split open.

And there are battlements high in the sky, as though they were

the primary flight feathers of soaring white doves.

Dwellings of al-Fath ibn Khaqan, which have never ceased to be

wealth for the destitute, or freedom for one in bonds.

No fugitive seeking refuge there is handed over,

nor does a seeker drawing their bounty fail.

A resourceful nobleman dwells there, whose bounty seems

the successive surges of a steady rain's rushing flood:

the outpouring of a hand overflowing with generosity,

and the radiance of a face bright with cheerfulness.

His favors followed one another upon the people, so that

every tribe in Syria and Iraq found enough in them.

How much blood they saved among mighty Taghlib,

blood lawful to shed—and reunited the scattered and dispersed.

How many a grieving man in Hims they relieved,

whom death had come to grip by the throat.

Across the breadth of al-Urund toward them had already passed

battalions, driven forward legion after legion.

Through him they renewed life's coolness and leaned back

beneath the spreading, leafy shade of life.

So give thanks, sons of Kahlan, to the benefactor who

secured for you the judgment of the well-guided imam.

He turned the caliphate's advance away from you, after

the dazzling storm cloud's lightning had blazed.

The bright swords had already been drawn, and displayed were

the breasts of full-grown steeds, dark bay and piebald.

There, had he not snatched you free, you would have been thrust

onto something like the point of a sharpened, broad-bladed lance.

So do not be ungrateful to al-Fath for a benefactor's favors,

through which you escaped a cramped and narrow strait.

And renew your thanks to him, and he will return to you

with a generous man's bounty, streaming with rich gifts.

His generosity is an inborn trait that cannot be matched

by men who seek greatness through assumed virtues.

When they do not know where greatness is to be found,

he knows how to rise among its summits and ascend.

He loomed over his enemies from every direction,

and towered above them from every west and east,

with bright swords: whenever drawn against a people, that people is defeated,

and steeds that, whenever spurred toward victory, race ahead.

The sons of al-Abbas were aided by him with a keen sword,

all-cleaving, and resolve like a scorching meteor,

and a heart faithful in private, offering them

the counsel of one with a burning breast, full of concern.

Around them, through his counsel and defense,

is the cave-like shelter of a mountain encircling the caliphate.

I have found that whoever seeks your station turns away

disgraced, while whoever seeks through your efforts attains his goal.

    وَما لِيَ إِلّا وُدُّ صَدري وَمَنطِقي

    Yours is the merit, and your favor to me is plain;

and I have only my heart's love and my words.
