فَلَمّا اِنتَحَينا لِشُربِ الغَلَس
I saw Masʿūd at a gathering;
I saw Mas'ud in a gathering
then, when we withdrew to drink in the predawn darkness,
When we turned aside to drink the late-night cups
تَغَنّىhe sang وَنَحنُwhile we عَلىin لَذَّةٍpleasure
تَغَنّى وَنَحنُ عَلى لَذَّةٍ
فَأَرعَدَso shuddered بَعضٌsome وَبَعضٌand some نَعَسgrew drowsy
فَأَرعَدَ بَعضٌ وَبَعضٌ نَعَس
he sang while we were enjoying ourselves;
He sang, while we were in the midst of pleasure -
so some shuddered, and some grew drowsy.
Some shuddered, some fell asleep
