Suppose the dwelling returned the echo of what you say,

And the campsite gave an answer to what you ask it:

Is there in that a cure for anguish that inflamed the breast

With its burning, and whose turmoil enlisted tears?

It is tears, reserved for every ruined campsite

Where you pause, or company from which you part.

May time's ease and gentleness follow them in succession,

And may spring's drizzle and downpour water them,

Even if, in the present course of time, there is from them

No favor—and the future of your days lies hidden.

    فَهَل مُقبِلٌ بِالقُربِ وَالوَصلِ قابِلُه

    The year passed in estrangement from them and separation;

Will its successor bring closeness and reunion?

I hazard guesses concerning Layla, and hope

For the later stages of a love whose beginnings disappointed me.

And one night, as we dozed upon the pale camels, she sent

A phantom vision whose illusion resembled truth.

But for dawn's whiteness, I would have clung longer

To the flanks of a gazelle I spent the dark hours wooing.

And how many a praiseworthy kindness the night has shown me,

And how many a calamity dawn brings, its harms condemned!

I have said to one lifting his gaze toward glory:

Leave glory: al-Fath ibn Khaqan occupies it.

The spear-point of the Commander of the Faithful, and his sword,

And the bounty of the Commander of the Faithful, and his largesse.

Through him his wars are kindled against oath-breakers,

And through him his gifts come within reach of petitioners.

He towers through his favors—who can rival his height?

And embraces all with his bounty—who can compete with him?

I have vouched on the strivers' behalf that they will catch up with him,

When his blessings and generous gifts are recounted.

Can any people match his giving, when they have striven

Yet have not offered thanks worthy of what he bestows?

He struck at the enemies' frenzy from valor's sharp edge,

With which his blades cut beneath the battle-dust.

And a sword is merely finery for one setting out at dawn,

If its bearer is not keener than the sword.

He first bestowed on me a kindness: rain upon the soil,

Its dew came in succession, and its thickets shone.

Through him I was safe from time, which I used to fear,

And through him I gained the rank I had hoped for.

And when we reached the threshold of admission, held back were

Men from the door through which I was entering.

Then I gained close access to a man of majesty:

I face the horizon's full moon whenever I face him.

To one so extravagant in giving that, were Hatim

Beside him, Hatim would become his reprover.

He appeared before me, praiseworthy in nature; tucked up were

His robes about him, and his sword-belts hung long.

Like a Rudayni spear standing upright, straightened are

Its segments for thrusting, and its upper shaft quivers.

And like the full moon, attended at fullness by its lucky stars,

Its radiance complete, its stations risen high.

Then I greeted him, and awe held my heart captive,

Contending with me for the words I meant to say.

But when I beheld his affability, and he turned

Toward me with cheer whose signs put me at ease,

I drew near and kissed generosity in the hand of a man

Whose face was handsome and whose fingers were long and supple.

His virtues were pure as wine grows clear,

And his manners were gentle as the breeze is gentle.
