العَيشُlife فيin لَيلِthe night of دارَيّاDarayya إِذاwhen بَرَداit grows cool
وَالراحُand the wine نَمزُجُهاwe mix it بِالماءِwith water مِنfrom بَرَدىthe Barada
Life's delight lies in Darayya's night when it grows cool,
Living in Daraya at night when it is cold
and we mix wine with water from the Barada.
And mixing our drink with cold water
قُلsay لِلإِمامِto the imam الَّذيwho عَمَّتspread throughout فَواضِلُهُhis bounties
شَرقاًeastward وَغَرباًand westward فَماso not نُحصيwe count لَهاfor them عَدَداa number
Tell the imam whose bounties have spread
Say to the Imam whose virtuous deeds
east and west, so we cannot count their number:
Have spread far and wide, we cannot count them
اللَهُGod وَلّاكَentrusted you with عَنbased on عِلمٍknowledge خِلافَتَهُHis caliphate
وَاللَهُand God أَعطاكَgave you ماwhat لَمdid not يُعطِهِgive it أَحَداanyone
God knowingly entrusted you with His caliphate,
God has protected you from the knowledge of those opposing the caliphate
and God gave you what He gave no one else.
And God has given you what he has not given anyone else
وَماand never بَعَثتَyou sent عِتاقَpurebred الخَيلِthe horses فيon سَفَرٍa journey
إِلّاexcept تَعَرَّفتَyou found فيهِin it اليُمنَgood fortune وَالرَشَداand right guidance
And never have you sent thoroughbred horses on a journey
Whenever you dispatched the brave horses on a journey
without finding in it good fortune and right guidance.
You recognized good fortune and proper guidance
أَمّاas for دِمَشقُDamascus فَقَدso indeed أَبدَتrevealed مَحاسِنَهاher beauties
وَقَدand indeed وَفىfulfilled لَكَfor you مُطريهاher praiser بِماwith what وَعَداhe promised
As for Damascus, she has indeed revealed her beauties,
As for Damascus, it has displayed its beauties
and the one who extolled her has kept his promise to you.
And its rains have fulfilled what was promised you
إِذاwhen أَرَدتَyou wish مَلَأتَyou fill العَينَthe eye مِنwith بَلَدٍa city
مُستَحسَنٍpleasing to behold وَزَمانٍand a time يُشبِهُresembles البَلَداthe city
Whenever you wish, you may feast your eyes on a city
If you want, you can fill your eyes with a land
lovely to behold, and a time that matches the city.
Beautiful and a time resembling an ancestral land
يُمسيis at evening السَحابُthe clouds عَلىover أَجبالِهاher mountains فِرَقاًin bands
وَيُصبِحُand is at morning النَبتُthe vegetation فيin صَحرائِهاher desert بَدَداscattered
At evening, clouds lie in bands over her mountains,
The clouds disperse over its mountains
and at morning, plants are scattered across her desert.
And vegetation sprouts in its deserts
فَلَستَso you do not تُبصِرُsee إِلّاexcept واكِفاًdripping خَضِلاًmoisture-laden
أَوor يانِعاًflourishing خَضِراًgreen أَوor طائِراًa bird غَرِداsinging sweetly
So you see only a dripping, moisture-laden cloud,
You see only a thriving green
or flourishing green growth, or a sweetly singing bird.
Or a chirping bird or one that warbles
كَأَنَّماas though القَيظُthe summer heat وَلّىdeparted بَعدَafter جيأَتِهِits arrival

As though the summer heat had departed after its arrival,
As if the summer heat has gone after its torment
or spring had drawn near after being far away.
Or spring has come after being so far
ياO أَكثَرَgreatest of الناسِthe people إِحساناًin beneficence وَأَعرَضَهُمand broadest among them

سَيبَنin bounty وَأَطوَلَهُمand longest among them فيin المَكرُماتِnoble deeds يَداof hand
O most beneficent of people, and broadest among them
O most generous of people, yet most unassuming
in bounty, and with the farthest-reaching hand in noble deeds,
Your good deeds are long lasting

We ask God only that you continue to enjoy the
We ask of God only that your blessings upon us endure
blessings among us, and that you remain ours forever.
And that they remain ours forever
