O Abu al-Saqr, your promise is assured,

and promises among the noble are debts.

Hands have been raised toward you, and strained

toward you in purposeful expectation are eyes.

And hopes have sought you, where culminate

the blessings of this world, and faith is exalted.

    أَو نُحاوِلُ لَدَيكَ ديناً فَدينُ

    If we desire worldly gain from you, worldly gain is ours;

or seek religious good from you, religious good is ours.

And it is shameful, when I seek your help, to seek

another helper in the matter for which I seek help.

And my stay, with half the year already passed,

if it does not mar, it does not adorn.

A dark quest: neither is the night lifted

to reveal success, nor does the morning appear.

    إِن أَلَطَّ الغَريمُ أَدّى الضَمينُ

    And you bear the guarantee, and judgment in our case is yours;

if the debtor withholds payment, the guarantor pays.

My request is easy for you; and my judgment,

if I accept excuses for it, is unsound.

Let my poetry command its high price; for at a low

price and the like, inferior verse is sold.

And Ibn Abd al-Aziz is your wealth; you have relied

on him, and he is your stored-up treasure.

Of the sons of al-Shalmaghan, where has vanished

doubt about his excellence, and certainty is confirmed.

He spares no effort in obeying you; so whatever you

desire in affairs comes to pass with him.

If he sees earnest determination in you,

he will not reduce what Adhkutikin has increased.
