بِأَنفُسِناwith our own lives لاnot بِالطَوارِفِwith newly acquired wealth وَالتُلدِand inherited wealth
نَقيكَwe shield you الَّذيwhat تُخفيyou conceal مِنَof الشَكوِcomplaint أَوor تُبديyou reveal
With our own lives, not with newly acquired or inherited wealth,
With our own selves, not with vain shows and bragging speech,
we shield you from the suffering you conceal or reveal.
We come to you, who from complaint hidest or dost impart.
بِناupon us مَعشَرَcompany of العُوّادِthe sickbed visitors ماwhatever بِكَafflicts you مِنof أَذىًpain
وَإِنand if أَشفَقواthey fear مِمّاfrom what أَقولُI say فَبيthen upon me وَحديme alone
May we, your sickbed visitors, bear whatever pain afflicts you;
O company of those who visit me, let me no more
and if they fear what I say, let it fall on me alone.
Hear from you griefs about me, though solicitude incite your speech.
ظَلِلناwe kept on نَعودُwe visit in sickness المَجدَGlory مِنbecause of وَعكِكَyour fever الَّذيwhich
وَجَدتَyou suffered وَقُلناand we said اِعتَلَّfell ill عُضوٌa limb مِنَof المَجدِGlory
We kept visiting Glory because of your fever, which
We lived in glory during your prime, which found
you suffered, and we said, "A limb of Glory has fallen ill."
And when we said, "A limb of glory is impaired,"
وَلَمand did not نُنصِفِwe treat fairly اللَيثَthe lion اِقتَسَمناwe shared نَوالَهُhis bounty
وَلَمand did not نَقتَسِمwe share حُمّاهُhis fever إِذwhen أَقبَلَتit came تَرديrushing
And we did not treat the lion fairly: we shared his bounty,
We did not deal justly with the lion when we shared his spoil,
and did not share his fever when it came rushing on.
Yet did not share his zeal when daring came.
بَدَتappeared صُفرَةٌa yellow pallor فيin لَونِهِhis complexion إِنَّindeed حَمدَهُمtheir praise
مِنَamong الدُرِّpearls ماthat which اِصفَرَّتturned yellow نَواحيهِits edges فيin العِقدِthe necklace
A yellow pallor appeared in his complexion; indeed, what they praise
A pallor showed upon his face while their praise
among pearls is that whose edges have yellowed in the necklace.
Of his teeth was the pure pearl's yellowish white.
وَحَرَّتand grew hot عَلىto الأَيديthe hands مَجَسَّةُthe spot touched كَفِّهِhis palm
كَذَلِكَlikewise مَوجُwaves البَحرِof the sea مُلتَهِبُblazing الوَقدِburning heat
And his palm felt hot to the hands that touched it;
And his soft padded paw was like the fire
so too the sea's waves blaze with heat.
That gloweth bright on the litten waves by night.
وَلَستَand you do not تَرىyou see عودَa branch الأَراكَةِof the arak tree خائِفاًafraid
سَمومَscorching heat الرِياحِof the winds الآخِذاتِthat take away مِنَfrom الرَندِthe laurel
And you do not see a branch of the arak tree fearing
Nor fearest thou to see the tall sapling of the Arak-tree
the scorching winds that ravage the laurel.
Blown by the spicy wind that clips it from its root.
وَماand not الكَلبُthe dog مَحموماًfever-stricken وَإِنand even if طالَgrew long عُمرُهُits life
أَلاbehold إِنَّماonly الحُمّىfever عَلىupon الأَسَدِthe lion الوَردِtawny
And a dog suffers no fever, however long it lives;
No age makes the dog rabid if his life is long:
behold, fever strikes only the tawny lion.
Nay, but rabid is only the honourable knight.
