A watch of darkness on the head, overtaken by a full moon,

and a night dispelled, but not by morning or dawn.

And a yearning man's locks, whose graying has arrived

when neither youth nor life had ended.

So desist: gray hair is just in its decree,

though it may be unjust to bid you desist.

For those eyes' tears have never wronged them

over a calamity unless its coming was dreadful.

Yet a visitor returns to me by night—

a longing whose embers in the breast never fade.

Longing has not wronged the ribs; rather,

my gray hair and time have become wrongdoers toward longing.

Indeed, by the father of days, no one has feared, while clinging

to Khidr's cords, the turn of a calamity that strikes.

Nor does it harm a land showered by his hand's bounty

and made lush, that no rain should fall there.

And when he favored the land of Iraq with his nearness,

his sea surged there, and his overflowing bounty.

And in the reaches of the Hijaz, a cloud showered

desert wastes with neither five-day nor ten-day watering.

Nor was there any lack of bounty or a raincloud's downpour

from him, in any distant earthly horizon or region.

So the bands of consecrated pilgrims were succored where no

relief was hoped for, not even a scant or meager supply.

I bear witness: I truly saw that, and indeed

the reward falls short of the measure of it.

When we made for Surr Man Ra, the two dwindled—

the desert folk and townsmen, with no Khidr to host them.

And the gift-seekers' wishes were fulfilled, where no

hardship of life was feared, nor poverty.

And where rain is disparaged, though rain is plentiful,

the world is deemed too little, and the sea a mere inlet.

And where you see hopes grazing among wishes,

and neither meadow nor blossoms are their pasture there.

Beside a king grown rich in glory and wealth,

because he did not think wealth meant a growing surplus.

The mainstay of the rulers of the House of Hashim,

when the great calamity grows grave or the frontier is breached.

He strengthens whatever among them exceeds their power,

and heals whatever is too stubborn to be cured.

He is the steadfast mountain acknowledged by

the men of Nizar, humbled against their will and pale.

Whenever they crane their necks, their arrogance is brought low

by his noble qualities, before which glory prostrates itself.

So I swore by the riders who clad themselves

in the night's allotted stretches of travel, while wayfaring,

    on gaunt she-camels like bows,

lean, scorched by noonday heats and the wasteland,

through every bare, level stretch of desert waste,

and unknown, trackless wilderness whose passes are dust-gray,

until they circled the Hatim, and were embraced

at the morning circumambulation, by the House, the Corner, and the Hijr.

If authority were to lie outside the House of Hashim,

then, without a doubt, authority would be his.

Through you Wa'il's pillars stood firm, and there came

to him a reputation towering above mankind, and renown.

And if the two elders, Bakr and Taghlib, were resurrected,

they would recount no glory like yours, O Khidr.

No man has sought your path as he climbs

toward eminence without breathlessness overwhelming him

and barring him from attaining your glory; indeed,

the radiant stars shrink before its brilliance.

When thoughts range over you, they recognize

that thoughts cannot encompass your noble qualities.

And how can poetry achieve that, when only

thoughts are conveyed by speech or voiced by poetry?
