You think my sorrows have not surged,

though parting has wrenched away the one it wrenched away.

She gestured with two eyes lined

with kohl of enchantment and deep blackness as she bade farewell.

    A farewell embrace sent swirling

my tears across hers, and they mingled.

Is our hour of reunion to awaken

the estrangement of months—or years—gone by?

Your turning away was nothing but coquetry,

nothing but boredom, nothing but coy allure.

Even if there have come between us

wildernesses where mirages have ocean depths,

how many a garden in spring's courtyard

has lightning laughing with it from every ravine!

When the wind shakes its branches,

its blossoms embrace and pair off.

We met you there, and you vied with it

in supple swaying and sweet fragrance.

of rain, streaming over it or falling in torrents,

though he barred me from my due and did not

hand it over—its Yaqub ibn al-Faraj.

Does Yaqub squander my money in his hands,

    while Yaqub stays unhurried, unprovoked?

And I am well able to keep him from rejoicing

in what he gained from me, or taking delight.

When he tightened the loop of his zunnar belt

around a huge turd and puffed himself up,

And where do his many supporters come from,

one bowlegged man after another coming to him?

His wife's clitoris has grown night-blind

with old age, and his son has grown burly.

Why did he not scruple at what he committed

against me, that scoundrel? Why did he feel no guilt?

O Abu Yusuf, what you did is vile,

and one like you was not wont to do vile things.

Come to truth: let us journey toward it by night,

with our proof concerning it, or set out before dawn.

And hold to the truth until there shines

for us the darkness of this matter, or it breaks into light.

At a hearing after which there will be for us

no whispered wrangling, no place for strife.

Whoever the judgment acquits there is saved,

and whoever it ensnares there is caught.

against you in your denial, ruinous and clamorous,

and sever what is entwined in their covenant,

and fart into the Catholicos's beard

when he bellows over the Book of Isaiah and roars,

and declare that those who first devised

the Christians' learning are rabble and riffraff,

as pledge that you did not ruin my money, nor

seek out tangled arguments against me?

Then, if you have dissembled, betrayed, or

persisted in wronging me among those who persisted,

and revere what the Jews revere,

praying toward their qibla or making pilgrimage,

and fuck your old woman until you thrust back

inside her womb what came out,

    and demolish Mar Sergius's church,

and extinguish its fires and lamps,

and set alight its bell and the cross

beneath your supper until it cries out,

and rise early to shit at the

great altar, and smear those steps,

and remain under a curse from God,

abiding upon you, never moving away—

and any Thomas, whenever he thrusts

    into your wife's gaping cleft.

An oath: whenever a man permits himself

to shoulder it before a judge, he wins.
