أَعجِبmarvel لِظُلمِat the injustice of زَمانِناour age المُتَواتِرِunceasing
وَلِأَوَّلٍand at the first مِمّاof what يُريكَit shows you وَآخِرِand the last
Marvel at the unceasing injustice of our age,
I'm amazed at the recurring injustice of our time,
And at the first and last of what it shows you.
Both the first of what you're shown and the last.
تَاللَهِby God أوخَذُI am held liable بِالخَراجِfor the land tax وَضَيعَتيand my estate
لَحمٌflesh يُطَرَّحُis flung فيinto مَخالِبِthe talons of طائِرِa bird
By God, I am held liable for land tax, while my estate
By Allah, they seized my land tax and ruined me,
Is flesh flung into a bird’s talons.
Flesh thrown to the claws of a vulture.
وَيُغِلُّهاand reap its yield قَومٌpeople وَأُعطيand I pay خَرجَهاits tax
حُكمٌa ruling لَعَمرِكَby your life غَيرُother than عَدلٍjustice ظاهِرِmanifest
And others reap its yield, while I pay its tax:
And people extort it, though I pay its tax,
A ruling, by your life, far from manifest justice.
A rule, by your life, with no justice apparent.
صَلّىmay … bless الإِلَهُGod عَلىupon سَدومَSadum فَلَمfor … not يَكُنhe was
فيin جَنبِthe side of قِصَّتِناour case سَدومُSadum بِجائِرِat all unjust
May God bless Sadum, for he was not
God pray upon Sodom, yet it was not
Unjust at all beside our own case.
In comparison to our story, unjust.
أَبلِغtell أَباAbu العَبّاسِal-Abbas حَيثُwhere أَحَلَّhe settled مَنin
حَلَبٍAleppo مَكانَthe place of الغَيثِthe rain فيناamong us الماطِرِpouring down
Tell Abu al-Abbas, where he has settled in
Tell Al-‘Abbas where he has settled after
Aleppo, taking the place among us of pouring rain:
Halab, the place of rain for us, the pouring.
أَتَجورُdo you stray unjustly? عَنfrom نَظَرٍoversight لَناfor us مِنfrom بَعدِafter ماthat
سُمّيتَyou were named مِنbecause of نَظَرٍoversight لَناfor us بِالناظِرِas the overseer
Do you turn unjustly from looking after us, after
Do you deny us any care, after you were named
Being called ‘overseer’ for looking after us?
The one caring for us by care itself?
وَمَنَعتَنيand you denied me الإِنصافَfair treatment مِنكَfrom you وَلَمand not تَكُنyou were
تَأباهُrefuse it فيtoward بَرٍّa righteous person وَلاnor فيtoward فاجِرِa wicked person
And you denied me justice at your hands, though you never used to
And you denied me justice, yet you weren’t
Refuse it to the righteous or the wicked.
One to refuse rightness, nor corruptness.
