أَباO father of عَلِيٍّAli ياO فَتىyoung man الأَشعَرِal-Ash'ar
أَبا عَلِيٍّ يا فَتى الأَشعَرِ
وَاِبنَand son of فَتاهاits young man السَيِّدِthe lord الأَزهَرِthe radiant
وَاِبنَ فَتاها السَيِّدِ الأَزهَرِ
O Abu Ali, O youth of al-Ash'ar,
O Abū ‘Alī, O youth of Ash‘ar,
and son of its youth, the radiant lord,
And son of their chief, the most fragrant,
قَدindeed كَمَلَbecame complete المَجدُglory لِقَحطانَfor Qahtan إِذwhen
قَد كَمَلَ المَجدُ لِقَحطانَ إِذ
كَمَلتَyou attained perfection لِلسَيفِfor the sword وَلِلمِنبَرِand for the pulpit
كَمَلتَ لِلسَيفِ وَلِلمِنبَرِ
glory became complete for Qahtan when
Glory is now complete for Qahtan,
you attained perfection in sword and pulpit.
As you are complete in sword and minbar.
وَاِبنُand the son of أَبيthe father of جَعفَرٍِJa'far المُرتَجىlooked to with hope
وَاِبنُ أَبي جَعفَرٍِ المُرتَجى
لِمِثلِfor the like of أَفعالِthe deeds of أَبِيthe father of جَعفَرِJa'far
لِمِثلِ أَفعالِ أَبِي جَعفَرِ
And the son of Abu Ja'far, in whom hope is placed
Son of Abū Ja‘far, the hoped-for one,
for deeds like those of Abu Ja'far,
For deeds like his father Abū Ja‘far's;
قَدindeed سارَdeparted بِالمَجدِwith glory فَخَيَّمthen encamped بِهِwith it
قَد سارَ بِالمَجدِ فَخَيَّم بِهِ
وَغابَand went away عَنّاfrom us بِالنَدىwith bounty فَاِحضُرِso come
وَغابَ عَنّا بِالنَدى فَاِحضُرِ
has departed with glory and encamped with it,
You marched on with glory and camped with it,
and gone from us with bounty—so come!
And hid from us in dew, so appear!
هَلquestion particle أَنتَyou مُسقيناgiving us drink سُخامِيَّةًsmooth, aged wine
هَل أَنتَ مُسقينا سُخامِيَّةً
حَمراءَred مِثلِlike الذَهَبِgold الأَحمَرِred
حَمراءَ مِثلِ الذَهَبِ الأَحمَرِ
Will you give us smooth, aged wine to drink,
Will you give us to drink a red draught
red as red gold?
Like red gold, sparkling and pure?
