And I delight in the wounds that sweet rhymes inflict.

And I delight in the sweet wounding of verse

وإلى مزج حبر القلم دم الأطراف

وإلى مزج حبر القلم دم الأطراف

يصير لي معنى على الناس خافي

يصير لي معنى على الناس خافي

And when the pen's ink mingles with the blood of the fingertips,

And to mixing the ink of my pen with the blood of my fingers

A meaning comes to me, hidden from others.

Becomes for me a meaning hidden from people

عندي معاني الشعر تلمس وتنشاف

عندي معاني الشعر تلمس وتنشاف

أنما جرحك الشعر ما هو ب كافي

أنما جرحك الشعر ما هو ب كافي

To me, poetry's meanings can be touched and seen.

I have meanings of poetry that touch and flare up

If poetry does not wound you, it is not enough.

You have not wounded enough with your poetry

وان ما لمس في القلب .. احساس وشغاف

وان ما لمس في القلب .. احساس وشغاف

عدّك كتبته فوق رمل السوافي

عدّك كتبته فوق رمل السوافي

And if it does not touch feeling and the heart's very core,

And if it does not touch the heart.. feeling and passion

It is as though you wrote it on windblown sand.

Do not think you have written it on the sands of al-Sawafi

لاتحسب ان البحر موج ومجداف

لاتحسب ان البحر موج ومجداف

ترى قليل البحر ما كان طافي

ترى قليل البحر ما كان طافي

Do not think the sea is merely waves and an oar.

Do not assume the sea is just wave and oar

You see, what floats is only a small part of the sea.

You see little of the sea is afloat
