The thin-forelocked mule has come; drawing forth from

Her the lightning is a shower of bounty, whose giver pours in torrents.

Of ancient pedigree, she takes after her maternal uncles; hers is

Through noble breeding, the finest nobility of both breeds.

Filling the girth and filling the saddle-felt, broad-barreled,

Her visible beauty shows you her fault-finder.

The meadow gave her, from its own qualities, a marking,

Green and fresh, when its own verdure faded.

She is not the first gift of a mount with which you bought

My praise, nor, O possessor of glory, is she the last.

How many a galloping steed has preceded her! In my hand

Its rein, and upon al-Jawzāʾ its hoof.
