فَماso not يَقدَحُmars الفَقرُpoverty فيin حالِهِhis condition
وَلاand not يَطمَعُhopes الدَهرُTime فيfor قَصدِهِassailing him
So poverty does not mar his condition,
Neither does poverty affect his state,
And Time has no hope of assailing him.
Nor does fate aspire to thwart his aims.
وَكَيفَand how وَقَدwhen already صارَhas become ضَيفَthe guest الغَمامِof the clouds
وَهُوَwhile he قَريبٌis near عَلىdespite بُعدِهِhis distance
And how could it, when he has become the guest of the clouds,
How could it, when he has become a guest of the clouds,
While he is near despite his distance?
And is near though distant he remains.
وَمَنand whoever عَقَلَتclung بِأَبيto Abu تَغلِبُTaghlib
يَداهُhis two hands اِحتَذىemulated البَدرَthe full moon مِنthrough سَعدِهِhis good fortune
And whoever has clung to Abu Taghlib
Whose mind was gifted by Abu Taghlib,
With both hands has emulated the full moon through his good fortune.
His hands copied the full moon in its glory.
همامٌa magnanimous man قَضىordained اللَهُGod مِنfrom عَرشِهِHis throne
لَهُfor him بِالإِمارِةِwith princely rule فيin مَهدِهِhis cradle
A magnanimous man—God ordained from His throne
Hammam whom Allah had ordained,
Princely rule for him while he was in his cradle.
To the Emirate while in his cradle.
فَطودُso the mountain السِيادَةِof lordship فيon دَستِهِhis throne
وَشَمسُand the sun الرِياسَةِof leadership فيwithin بُردِهِhis mantle
So the mountain of lordship is on his throne,
In his hands lies the mantle of leadership,
And the sun of leadership is within his mantle.
And the sun of supremacy in his cloak.
