Short in stature, hunchbacked though not from age;
With a hunchbacked palace though not out of arrogance
Lowly in appearance, soft in aspect (wording uncertain);
Disdained in appearance though versed in ink
مستضعفdeemed weak لكنbut إذاwhen ضيمwronged انتصرavenged itself
مستأنسtame فإنthen if مسناهwe touched it نفرit sprang away
Deemed weak, yet when wronged it takes revenge;
Weak yet victorious if oppressed
Tame, yet if we touch it, it springs away;
Sociable though spurned if he draws near

مفوقnocking سهماan arrow إذاwhen شكit pierces انسمرit stays embedded
And if it commits an offense, it makes no apology;
Never apologizing if he commits a crime
It nocks an arrow that, when it pierces, stays embedded;
Outstripping arrows if doubts assail

Its arrowheads are grain, and its dwelling is in pits.
His weapons are love and his home the grave
When the sparrow saw grain that had been scattered,
When the sparrow spied the seeds that appeared
ارتابwas suspicious بالحنطةof the wheat ماwhat lay بينamong المدرthe clods
ولمand did not يزلcease بينbetween الرجاءhope والحذرand caution
It distrusted the wheat lying among the clods,
He doubted the wheat amid the furrows
And remained between hope and caution:
Remaining 'tween hope and caution

ثمthen هوىswooped down مستيقناًconvinced لماwhen افتكرit reflected
Greed urged it on, and danger confounded it.
Driven by greed and exhausted by danger
Then it swooped down, convinced after reflecting
Then swooped with certainty when he recalled
انthat بنيthe children of الدنياthe world جميعاًall فيin غررperil
وأملand hoped for النفعbenefit ولمand did not يخشfear الضررharm
That all the children of the world are at risk.
That people of the world are all in peril
And it hoped for gain and feared no harm,
Hoping for gain and fearing not harm

So the trap bound it in the snares of misfortune,
So the snare captured him with hooks of others
And it could not ward off decree and destiny.
Unable to resist fate and destiny
وكثرةand an abundance of الاطماعgreedy desires آفاتscourges of البشرhumankind
وفيand in تصاريفthe changing fortunes of اللياليthe nights معتبرa lesson
And excessive greed is the bane of humankind;
And many desires are mankind's defects
And in the changing fortunes of the nights there is a lesson:
In the turns of nights he is reminded
والحزمand prudence أنto تجزعfeel alarm منfrom حيثwhere تسرyou are gladdened
وآخرand the end of الصفوunclouded joy وإنand even if لذit is sweet الكدرmurk
And prudence is to feel alarm where you find joy;
Prudence is to fear where you feel joy
And unclouded joy, however sweet, ends in murk.
And the last of pleasures, though the bitterness pleases
