ياO سادَتيmy lords هذِهِthis نَفسيmy soul تُوَدِّعُكُمbids you farewell
يا سادَتي هذِهِ نَفسي تُوَدِّعُكُم
إِذsince كانَwas لاnot الصَبرُpatience يُسليهاconsoles it وَلاnor الجَزعُanguish
إِذ كانَ لا الصَبرُ يُسليها وَلا الجَزعُ
O my lords, this is my soul bidding you farewell,
My lords, this soul of mine bids you farewell
Since neither patience nor anguish consoled it.
As neither patience comforts it, nor grief avails
قَدindeed كُنتُI was أَطمَعُI hope فيin رَوحِsolace الحَياةِlife لَهاfor it
قَد كُنتُ أَطمَعُ في رَوحِ الحَياةِ لَها
فَالآنَso now إِذsince بِنتُمُyou have departed لَمdid not يَبقَremain ليfor me طَمَعُhope
فَالآنَ إِذ بِنتُمُ لَم يَبقَ لي طَمَعُ
I had hoped that life would bring it solace;
I had hoped for the spirit of life to linger in it
So now that you have departed, no hope remains for me.
But now that you are gone, I have no more hope
لاmay not عَذَّبَtorment اللَهُGod روحيmy soul بِالبَقاءِwith continued life فَماfor ... not
لا عَذَّبَ اللَهُ روحي بِالبَقاءِ فَما
أَظُنُّنيI think myself بَعدَكُمafter you بِالعَيشِfrom life أَنتَفِعُI benefit
أَظُنُّني بَعدَكُم بِالعَيشِ أَنتَفِعُ
May God not torment my soul with continued life, for I do not
May God not torment my soul with remaining
think I shall benefit from life after you.
For without you, I think life no more profitable
