It is another, not I, whose nobility ambitions assail;
The one whom desires aim at his nobility
and another whose abasement greed makes easy.
While others because of greed make themselves abject

And had I been one whose soul accepts indignity,
Had I been of those who accept wronging themselves
I would not have forsaken the one my soul longs to join.
I would have avoided estranging myself from the intimacy my soul desires

I bade my heart obey a passion's rule,
Passion inclined my heart to obey its rule
but its reproach reached me before the reproving women's.
So precede me before blamers blame me

He imagined me like other lovers, frightened
Make me fancy like lovers, frighten me
by his shunning, or my earnestness slain by his jesting.
Avoid him or jesting would ruin my seriousness

وفيand in يدهhis hand عقدthe binding of الفؤادthe heart وحلهand its unbinding
Yet I do meet him with an ascetic's detachment,
Yet I meet him with a hermit's serenity
while in his hand lie the heart's binding and unbinding.
Though in his hand is the knot of my heart and its resolution

I contend with my gaze as I contemplate his beauty,
I divert my eyes contemplating his beauty
and resent what would content another even in its smallest share.
And dislike what pleases anyone else the least

And there is no good in one whose judgment love controls,
No good is in one passion rules his opinion
even if its tether holds sway over the love-enslaved heart.
Even if the yearning heart possesses its rope
