إِنif لاحَit comes into view قُلتُI say أَدُميَةٌis it a statue? أَمor هَيكَلُa mighty steed
أَوor عَنَّit appears قُلتُI say أَسابِحٌis it a galloping steed? أَمor أَجدَلُa falcon
If it comes into view, I say: “Is it a statue or a mighty steed?”
If I said it is rosy or paleness
Or if it appears, I say: “Is it a galloping steed or a falcon?”
Or if I said it's pearls or corals
تَتَخاذَلُfalter الأَلحاظُthe gazes فيin إِدراكِهِperceiving it

وَيَحارُand is bewildered فيهِby it الناظِرُthe beholder المُتَأَمِّلُthe contemplative
Gazes falter in perceiving it,
Perplexed are the glances in beholding it
And the contemplative beholder is bewildered by it.
And the beholder is baffled, though thoughtful
فَكَأَنَّهُso it is as though فيin اللُطفِdelicacy فهمٌinsight ثاقِبٌpenetrating
وَكَأَنَّهُand it is as though فيin الحُسنِbeauty حَظٌّfortune مُقبِلُdrawing near
So in delicacy it is like penetrating insight,
As if in delicacy it's penetrative wit
And in beauty it is like good fortune drawing near.
And as if in beauty it's a fateful lot
