لِأَنَّbecause مَآليmy ultimate recourse لَوif جَزَعتُI despaired إِلىto الصَبرِpatience
لِأَنَّ مَآلي لَو جَزَعتُ إِلى الصَبرِ
I endured, yet did not praise my nature for its patience,
I was patient, though not boastful of my patience,
for, had I despaired, my ultimate recourse would still have been patience.
For if I had despaired, patience would still have been my only recourse.

وَإِن آلَمَت لُطفٌ يَحُضُّ عَلى الشُكرِ
And in the midst of every calamity, God has,
In the midst of every affliction, God grants respite
however painful it may be, a kindness that calls for gratitude.
And though it pains me, His gentleness urges thankfulness.

And how often has relief, though despair bars the way to it,
How often has relief come to you from where you least expected it,
been brought to you by fate from an unexpected quarter.
Brought by destiny from where you knew not.
