عَينايmy eyes إِلّاexcept وَطَيفٌwhile a phantom مِنكَfrom you يَطرُقُنيvisits me by night
You taught your phantom to aid me, so sleep never came
To my eyes without a phantom of you visiting me by night.
فَكَيفَso how أَشكُرُcan I thank مَنone who إِنif نِمتُI sleep واصَلَنيkeeps me company
بِالطَيفِthrough the phantom مِنهُof him وَإِنyet if لَمnot أَغفِI doze قاطَعَنيsevers ties with me
So how can I thank one who, if I sleep, keeps me company
Through his phantom, yet if I do not doze, shuns me?
