بِقُربِكَin your nearness مِنfrom بِعادِكَyour distance استَجيرُI seek refuge
وَهَلand is there فيin الدَهرِtime غَيركَother than you مَنanyone who يُجيرُgrants refuge
I seek refuge in your nearness from your distance.
And who in all time but you grants refuge?
نَأَيتَyou went far away فَماso there is no لِسَلوائيfor my solace دُنُوٌّnearness
وَغِبتَand you are absent فَماso there is no لِلَذّاتيfor my pleasures حُضورُpresence
You have gone far away, and my solace does not draw near.
And you are absent, so my pleasures too are absent.
وَقَدand indeed صاحَبتُI kept company with إِخواناًbrothers وَلكِنand yet
مَتىwhen تُغنىsuffice عَنِin place of الشَمسِthe sun البُدورُthe full moons
And I have indeed kept company with brothers, but
When can full moons take the place of the sun?
فَياso, O مَنone who رُعتَyou frightened مِنهُof him الدَهرَTime قِدماlong ago
بِمَنthrough one who تَسموrise high بِخِدمَتِهِthrough serving him الأُمورُaffairs
So, O you who long ago made Time fear you,
In whose service all affairs rise high,
وَمَنand one whom قَدَّرتُI supposed أَنَّthat لَهُfor him نَظيراًan equal
فَحينَso when طَلَبتُI sought أَعوَزَنيeluded me النَظيرُthe equal
And you, whom I supposed to have an equal—
Yet when I searched, that equal eluded me.
إِذاif كُنتَyou are السُرورَjoy وغِبتَand you are absent عَنّيfrom me
فَكَيفَthen how يَتِمُّis complete بَعدَكَafter you ليfor me سُرورُjoy
If you are joy itself and are absent from me,
How, then, can joy be complete for me after you?
