كَأَنَّماas though اِدَّخَرَreserved الرَحمنُthe All-Merciful معظَمَةgreatness

دونَto the exclusion of المُلوكِthe kings لِسَيفِfor the sword الدَولَةِof the state البَطَلِthe hero
As though the All-Merciful had reserved greatness
for the hero Sayf al-Dawla, to the exclusion of other kings.
رَآهُHe deemed him أَكرَمَهُمthe most generous of them فيin الخَيرِgoodness إِنif ذُكِرواthey were mentioned
وَصفاًin description وَأَفضَلُهُمand the best of them فيin القَولِspeech وَالعَمَلِand deed
He deemed him the most generous of them in goodness, if they were mentioned
in description, and the best of them in speech and deed.
فَهَزَّهُso He brandished him وَظباwhile the blades الأَسيافِof swords مغمدَةٌwere sheathed
وَاِستَلَّهُand He unsheathed him غَيرَnot مَنسوبٍattributed إِلىto الفَلَلِchipping of the edge
So He brandished him while the blades of swords lay sheathed,
and unsheathed him, free of any nick in his edge.
حَتّىuntil غَداbecame الدينُthe faith مِنfrom بَعدِafter العَبوسِfrowning بِهِthrough him

Until, through him, the faith, after frowning, became
joyful, walking proudly in robes bestowed by his bounty.
فَلَوso if تَكَلَّمَit spoke فيin حالٍa circumstance وَقيلَand it were said لِهُto it
مَنwho خَيرُthe best هذاthis الوَرىhumankind لَمnot يُسَمِّname غَيرother than عَلىAli
So, were it to speak in any circumstance and be asked,
"Who is the best of these mortals?" it would name none but Ali.
