أَمُرُّI pass بِدارِby the house of عَمّارِAmmar بنِson of نَصرٍNasr
فَأَمنَحُهاso I offer it التَحِيَّةَgreetings وَالدُموعاand tears
I pass by the house of Ammar ibn Nasr,
and offer it greetings and tears.
وَاِستَحيand I feel ashamed before رباهاits hills أَنthat يَرانيsees me
بِهاin it حَيّاًalive وَقَدwhile already أَودىhe has perished صَريعاstricken down
And I am ashamed before its hills to be seen
alive there, while he has fallen dead.
وَكُنتُand I used to بِهاin it أَرودُseek العَيشَlife غَضاًfresh and tender
بِلَبلَبَةٍwith tender affection وَأَنتَجِعand I seek out الرَبيعاspring
And there I used to seek life, fresh and tender,
with tender affection, and seek out spring.
فَتَغمُرُنيso it engulfs me فيin سَحابَتِهاits cloud اِنسِكاباًpouring forth
وَتوسِعُنيand lavish upon me أَهِلَّتِهاits crescent moons طلوعاrising
Then it would drench me in its cloud's outpouring,
and its crescents would lavish their rising upon me.
فَلَيتَso, if only كَماjust as بِهاin it عِشناwe lived جَميعاًall together
وَحَمَّand came due حِمامُهُhis appointed death متناwe died جَميعاًall together
Would that, just as we all lived there together,
when his death came due, we had all died together.
